6A Recap: Coppell Girls and Ashlyn Hillyard Take 6A

The 6A Girls race started off with a bang as Ashlyn Hillyard pulled away from the field after the first mile to win the UIL 6A Girls State Championship. After the first mile, six girls came in at 5:27 but Ashlyn shook off the competition to run a 16:38 in what can only be described as utterly dominating performance. Brynn Brown followed in second with a 16:45 while Aubrey O'Connell, Heidi Nielson, and Natalie Cook, rounded out the top five.

Coppell took the team championship with a 79 point finish and were followed by Flower Mound with 93 points and Prosper with 94 points. Coppell's victory was especially impressive as their first runner came in 26th and a full 1:18 behind the first scorer. Their path to victory was predicated on how closely they all ran with one another as their first thru third place was only separated by 15 seconds.

The battle between 2nd and 3rd had all the drama that fans of the sport love as Prosper sat two points (82-80) behind Coppell after the first mile while Southlake sat in third with 120 and Flower Mound sat at 123. Flower Mound's top five scorers were sitting at 1-8-36-38-40 until Senior Anastaysia Davis of Flower Mound dug deep and made up huge ground as she moved from 23rd place after the first mile to 8th in the second mile to a 7th overall finish that helped super freshman Natalie Cook anchor the Flower Mound Jaguars to a second place finish. Fellow fleet footed freshman Aubrey O'Connell finished third overall in 16:52 to guide Propser to a third place finish.
