Southlake Carroll vs. The Woodlands
Why do we consider these two programs rivals? Well, these two programs the two programs are very similar in many things. The two schools are suburban schools, have made a name for themselves in distance running, similar training philosophies, cutting edge on everything from uniforms, and they both have the color green in their school colors.
That is a lot of things in common. However those are the most superficial and simplest of reasons to be a rival.
Then there is the Dallas - Houston thing that seems be a factor in a lot of things in the state.
Perhaps the main thing is that aside from these two schools, it has been an eternity since another team has won the boys state cross country title in the largest UIL division in Texas.
That "Eternity" boils down to the last 12 years. One of either The Woodlands (TWHS) or Southlake Carroll (SLC) has won state title in the last 12 years. In 10 of the last 18 years, both teams went first or second at the state meet.
So, while there may not be an internal rivalry between the two programs, there is definitely an unavoidable competitive confrontation that happens every year on the cross country course. Each team must physically and mentally prepared to beat the other to achieve their goal of being state champions.
If it weren't for SLC in 2014, TWHS could potentially have won a fifth straight title. If it weren't for TWHS, SLC would have won the last nine state titles. In fact, the last two state titles came down to a few points, seconds, and honestly a few meters being the difference between the two teams.
Under the helm of current head coaches Justin Leonard (SLC) and Juris Green (TWHS), all signs indicate there will clearly be a 14th consecutive year things could boil down between Southlake Carroll and The Woodlands for the 2019 UIL 6A boys state cross country team championship.
