Austin San Juan Diego's Abraham Avila Martinez came from almost obscurity to running in races with some of Texas' and the nation's biggest distance names and faces last track season. Although there was nothing significant to his 2018 cross country season, it was good and he was able to win the TAPPS 2A cross country state championships in 16:37 and finished 45th at NXR South. The highlight of cross in terms of time was his 15:43 at the Cedar Park Inv. It was Martinez' track season was a totally different story and has him on this list. He captured two more TAPPS 2A state titles, but it was his performances at the biggest and best meets in the spring that validated him as a stud. With PRs of 4:20 and 9:17 on the season and doing them in meets like Texas Relays, Texas Distance Festival, and Vandegrift Distance Festival Martinez appears ready for the next level. If his last track season ends up being a prelude to a breakout 2019 cross country season, his transition could be reminiscent of the track to cross success of fellow Austinite Anthony Monte had with his 2017-2018 seasons.
