2A Girls
In recent years, everything in region 2-1A has gone through the Sundown girls. In fact, they have run the state for the past several years so much, they consider last year's second place state meet finish as a down year. Last year, they nearly won the regional meet by 50 points and should be the heavy favorites on Monday.
The Gruver girls will dig into the huge gap from last year's final results. They have three girls who could all finish in the top 10.
Here are the girls top four team finishes:
1. Sundown
2. Gruver
3. Christoval
4. Wellington
The individual race should easily go to Wellington sophomore Kyla Kane. As a freshman, last year, Kane won both the regional title and the state championship. She should easily win her second regional title. Sundown's sister group of Ashlyn Peralta and Gabby Peralta should be the low sticks for Sundown in second and third.
2A Boys
Much like the girls meet in this region, the boys has been owned by Sundown. They had a regional and state meet streak of their own to uphold over the years. Last year, they fell at the state meet as they finished fourth as a team.
Sundown straight up dominated their district meet as usual, but the region could go in a different direction for the first time in years. Panhandle finished third at last year's meet to qualify for state, but they want a regional title this season and they could upset Sundown. If any year is the year to do it, it'll be this one as Mr. Do Everything Steven Quintanilla and three time state champ has graduated.
Panhandle has three big time runners who could be the difference makers. Boys Ranch is usually in the mix in Region 1 and should be this year as well as should Fort Hancock and Ozona.
Here are the boys top four team finishes:
1. Panhandle
2. Boys Ranch
3. Sundown
4. Fort Hancock
Individually, Panhandle's Elijah Brown is the top returner from last season and has the top time heading into Monday's Regional Championships.
