Meet Preview: Region 1 Cross Country Championships

Taytum Goodman competes at the 2020 UIL state track meet

Class 1A

Last year, Taytum Goodman (Springlake Earth) took the state by storm, but things really took off for her at the Region 1-1A Championships. She won the region by nearly a minute and she could be on her way to another big win this season. She has already run 10:52.14 this year, which proves the fitness she is already in.

Goodman wasn't the only freshman last year who was rolling. Daylee Chisum (Jayton) is back for her sophomore year after fourth at regionals last year and fifth at the state meet. She is currently the second best performer in 1-1A this season with her 12:18 SB.

Team wise, last year there was a heck of a battle for the fourth qualifying spot. Nazareth won the region and went on to win the state meet. Gail Borden County just missed going to Round Rock by scoring 137 points for the fourth position, but Springlake Earth (144), White Deer, (149) and Guthrie (158) were all in contention for the fourth spot.

That madness is expected to continue as Spur, Jayton, and Springlake Earth all have more than good chances to get out as teams. Spur has the ability to run a 13:29 average, Jayton can possibly go 13:30, and with an outstanding number one, Springlake Earth's possible average is around 13:20.

Borden County will again be in the fight for at least the fourth spot as they can run around a 14:07 team average, but Sands (14:00), Lenorah Grady (14:27), and Guthrie (14:18), are all hovering around the fourth position and are only a big race day from their fifth runner away from contention.

Just like Goodman is a for sure thing on the girls side, Brandon Passman (Guthrie) is about the same thing for the boys.  He was the region runner-up last year and continued that success at state with a third place finish.

In this, his senior year, Passman has been on another level. He is using the momentum from the state track meet where he won the 3,200m (9:16) and was second in the 1,600m (4:34). That has led to almost an undefeated season for the 1A star, his only loss was at the Hoka One One/McNeil Elite Invitational  where he finished 25th.

Team wise, Jayton and Sands were first and second at the regional meet and they tied for third at state, with Jayton winning on the sixth runner tie breaker.

Both teams return six of their seven runners from last season and are the top two teams heading into next week.
