Wyatt Hoover of Poth is the top returner from last year when he was third place and was coming off a superb kick in the 3,200 earlier in the day when he won that title.
He would challenge Riley Nedrow (Boyd) who led the 3,200m for many laps and who would take the pace out early with a 1:02.88 first lap. At the halfway mark, it would be Nedrow and Hoover running 1-2 with Angel Torres of Tornillo closing.
The three would run the third lap together will Nedrow still in the lead, but Hoover would begin to make his move and take it with 300m to go. Torres would also move ahead of Nedrow creating a kick for the win between himself and Hoover.
That's exactly what it came down to over the final 100m as Hoover was unable to replicate his 3,200m race kick from earlier; Torres would cross the line with arms stretched wide open in victory and a 4:16.84 PR.
In the fall, Torres and Hoover would run to perhaps the closest cross country state meet finish in UIL history as the both ran 15:57.40 only to be separated by a mere thousandth of a second.
Hoover added the runner-up to his hard days work with his 4:14.70 and Nedrow would hold on for the bronze medal in 4:23.17.
