Athletes To Watch At The Carl Lewis Invitational

Carl Lewis Invitational And Deloach Inv. Heat Sheets

The Carl Lewis Invitational is a Texas staple event during the indoor season. This season, it is so big that they had to close registration a month early.

Not only will Houston and Texas teams athletes be ones you'll want to keep an eye on this weekend, but there are competitors from Louisiana, Colorado, and beyond who will line up to run, jump, throw, and vault.

Here are some athletes to watch this weekend at the University of Houston:


Austin Kiser (R) is one of the top hurdlers in Texas

Boys

60m

Mekhi Boutte (Westgate, LA) - The New Iberia, Louisiana sprinter had a good 2023 opener last weekend at the LSU High School Classic. Boutte finished second overall in the 60m with a 6.95.

Omari Mitchell (Mansfield Timberview, TX) - Mitchell ran 7.06 last year during the indoor season. He was impressive outdoors with a 10.78 in the 100m. He also has a 21.40 PR outdoors in the 200m.

Bobby Drake (College Station, TX) - Now that football is over, the Texas A&M signee should really turn on the jets. He ran 7.06 last year in the 60m and 10.43 (w) and 21.94 outdoors.


60 Meter Hurdles

Austin Kiser (Denton Braswell, TX) - Kiser qualified for both hurdle events to the state meet last year. He ran 8.00 in the 60-meter hurdles last year and could begin 2023 sub-8 this weekend.

Justus Hadnot (Katy Morton Ranch, TX) - Hadnot is a 14 low 110 meter hurdler. He could challenge for the finals and possibly a sub 8.0 performance.

Jack Wetterling (Valor Christian, CO) - Wetterling is a Colorado state meet finalist in both hurdle events from last year. He is off to a great start to the year as he went 8.19 on December 1st.


Boys 800m

Aaron Crittendon (Killeen Ellison, TX) - Crittendon was third at the UIL 6A state meet in the 800m. and recently finished 11th at the UIL 5A state cross country championships. Has PRs of 1:52 - 800, 4:18 - 1600, 9:43 - 3200, 15:20 - 5K.

Boys 1600m

Jack Boyd (Klein Oak,TX) - Boyd is the runner-up from the UIL 6A state cross country state championships, last fall. He is fully capable in the shorter distances; he has a 4:16 PR in the 1600m.

Luke Mason - (Sugarland Logos Prep, TX) - Mason is on a TAPPS state meet winning streak. Last track season he won the 800m and 1600m. This fall, he doubled back for the XC state title. He has a 4:22 PR in the event.


Triple Jump

Karson Gordon (Houston Episcopal, TX) - Gordon is a stud triple jumper who performs well on this runway. He opened up last week at LSU in the triple jump with a 48-4.75. He has the best returning indoor jump by a Texan from last year with a 49-0.25.


Shot Put

Alberto Archundia - Archundia got a good start to thins last weekend at LSU when he threw 57-6.50 to win the shot put. He is the US No. 10 thrower this indoor season.


Girls 

60m

Royaltee Brown (Dallas Skyline, TX) - Brown has been an anchor on the Skyline team for the last two years. She has outdoor PRs of 11.8 and 23.6.

Kylah Woods - (Fort Bend Ridge Point, TX) - Woods is an all around sprinter. She has a 7.69 PR and opened up last weekend at LSU with a 7.71 to win her preliminary heat.


400m

Bayleigh Minor (Fort Bend Christian, TX) - Minor has a 54.49 PR in the 400m and a 2:17 in the 800m. Minor is an all-around type of sprinter as she also has a 24.44 best in the 200m, add those with her TAPPS state championships in the long jump and the triple jump last year. The sophomore didn't run indoors last year, so we'll see how she fares this weekend. She does have a 58.86 on this exact same banked track from when she was a middle schooler. 

Tiyan Ogbeide (Katy Jordan, TX) - The senior has run 2:13 in the 800m and 55.50 in the 400m. Those are successful outdoor numbers; we'll see how she fares on the boards. She has state meet experience.

Caila Lyons (1859) qualified for the UIL 6A state meet as a freshman in the 800m

Girls 800m

Avery Perkins (Hallsville, TX) - Perkins is a stud distance runner, her 13th place finish at the UIL 5A state cross country meet in November is proof. However, Perkins has been on the rise in the 800m over the last two years. She ran 2:11 at the TDF last year, and then rean 2:12 to finish fifth at state.

Caila Lyons (San Antonio Brennan) - As a freshman, Lyons was impressive running her way all of the way to a fourth place finish at state. She has a 2:13 PR.

Emma Goeke (Cy Ranch, TX) - Goeke is another state meet finisher entered to run in this event. Goeke is a 2:14 runner who opened up with a 2:20 last weekend at LSU. She expects to run faster and should on a banked track this weekend.


High Jump

Brianna Rivers (Summer Creek, TX) -Rivers was a state meet qualifier as a freshman last year. This will be her season opener this weekend in the high jump, but don't expect her to be rusty. She has a 5-8.75 PR.


Pole Vault

Laney Kucera (West, TX) -  Kucera is the reigning and defending UIL 3A state champion in the pole vault. She got things started back in November with a 11-6 jump, but could now be ready to really sky high.

Cannon Booker (Bridgeland, TX) - Recently, Booker jumped a 12-10 PR at the Expo Explosion and could get upto 13 feet this weekend.

Tierra Cullivan (Bridgeland, TX) - Cullivan has a 12-6 outdoor PR and just tied that mark two weeks ago at the Expo Explosion and could climb poles and clear more bars this weekend.

Sophia Kowalski - Kowalski is yet another 12-6 or higher jumper in this weekend's event. She is already having a great 2023 season already as she cleared 12-6 at the Expo Explosion and went 12-1.75 at LSU last weekend to finish runner-up.

India Alix is the nation's best combined long/triple jumper

Long Jump and Triple Jump

India Alix (Klein, TX) - Alix just might be the best jumper in the nation. She already jumped 20-11.75 in December at the North Texas Jumps Showcase. That is the fifth best distance ever for a Texas.  The University of Florida commit is more than just a long jumper, she is a very accomplished triple jumper as well. She has already jumped over 42 feet this indoor season. and could go for more this weekend.


Shot Put

Jazmine Thompson (Harlingen, TX) - Thompson ended the school year at the state meet in both the shot put and discus. She was seventh in the shot put and eventually threw 42-8 last year. She won at the NSAF Outdoor Nationals. Look out for the junior from South Texas!

Janey Campbell (Katy Seven Lakes, TX) - Campbell is fresh off her win at the LSU HS Indoor Classic where she threw 44-3 for the win for a US No. 5 ranking. She is gaining confidence in her form and in her ability. Whether she can throw an even bigger bomb this weekend isn't the question. How far can she throw?
