Micaela Villarreal (San Antonio Antonian) competes in 1,600m at the 2022 TAPPS State Championships
One of the more intriguing aspects of track & field is keeping an eye out for emerging talent after each graduating class. The class of '22 displayed amazing talent: Autumn Wilson and Hali Murphy of St. Dominic Savio, both University of Georgia signees, Ethan Sanders of San Antonio Christian (Texas A&M University), and Faith Mitchell of St. Agnes Academy, now throwing at Texas Tech.
While many TAPPS athletes will attempt a repeat or even three-peat victory at the state meet, one must also ask, who will emerge throughout the season and challenge this year's veterans, thus making a name for themselves?
Let's start with the boys.
BOYS
It is entirely possible that four (4) all-time TAPPS records can fall on the Boy's side.
1600 / 3200: Both records belong to Ben Shearer of The Woodlands Christian Academy. In 2021, Ben ran 4:13.29 and 9:10.69 to cap off a terrific high school career. Junior Marcelo Parra of San Antonio TMI-The Episcopal School logged a 4:12.82 at last year's TTFCA Meet of Champions, and his twin Franco Parra has an 8:55.15 3200 time to his credit, so both records are in danger.
The TAPPS all-time pole vault record has stood since 2001. Tom Rusteborg of Brownsville St. Joseph cleared 16-00.25, but Tomball Concordia Lutheran's Ryley Klefstead (Texas A&M signee) has cleared 17-02.25 and should make a serious run at etching his name in the record books.
Discus: Alex Adams of Colleyville Covenant is the current record holder with a throw of 177-05, set in 2008. JaHazniah Griffin of Austin St. Michael's recorded a 177-09 at the TAPPS 5A North Regional in 2022, so there's an excellent chance that he could claim the all-time discus mark.
While the above-mentioned bring serious clout to the track and the field, several other TAPPS male athletes should continue making names for themselves.
All Aaron Harris of 3A Austin Hill Country has accomplished the last two seasons is nine medals, 5 gold, 2 silvers and 2 bronze. He's not only TAPPS' top returning triple jumper at 46-02.25 (regardless of classification), but he also leads 3A in four events: 110h, 300h, long jump, and triple jump. He earned 39 points at the 2022 TAPPS State Championships.
Austin Hill Country's Aaron Harris
At the 1A level, junior David Salas of San Angelo Cornerstone Christian has a strong chance of repeating as champion in the 1600 (4:30.88 2022) and the 3200 (10:04.04 2022), while Elijah Burris of Brazosport Christian will attempt a three-peat in the triple jump; he won the event last year at 43-01.25.
San Angelo Cornerstone's David Salas
Cody Owens of Marble Falls Faith Academy and Trent Brown of Shiner St. Paul should score significant points toward potential team titles for the traditional TAPPS 2A powers. Owens won the 400 last season at 51:15 but should also factor in the 200. Brown, on the other hand, won the 110h at 15.44, but he has a PR of 14.03, and he should challenge for the 2023 high jump title.
Joining Aaron Harris to watch at the 3A level is Tiras McNeal of Houston Lutheran South and Caleb Ferguson of Denton Calvary Academy. McNeal won the 200 last season, but also enters the 2023 campaign with a 10.99 100. Ferguson enters 2023 with the top 1600 and 3200 times, 4:45.00 and 10:16.58.
Luke Mason (4A) of Sugarland Logos Preparatory Academy swept the 800, 1600 and 3200 in 2022. Can he leave his legacy with six mid and distance titles? Xavier Garza of San Antonio Holy Cross won the 110h and 300h in 2021, so he looks to redeem himself in 2023, plus he'll be a formidable challenge for the long jump crown with a PR over 21 feet.
Sugarland Logos Prep's Luke Mason
San Antonio TMI-The Episcopal School (5A) will bank on junior twins Marcelo and Franco Parra to garner significant points in the 1600 and 3200, but they'll also turn to junior Carter McCray for long jump gold. He enters 2023 with a 22-03.25 best. Noah Brooks of Fort Bend Christian Academy returns as the open 400-meter champion (49.41) while JaHazniah Griffin looks to repeat in both throws.
TMI -The Episcopal School's Franco and Marcelo Parra
In the 6A short sprints, look for Dallas Parish Episcopal's Ryan Forson to challenge - 10.88 and 22.14, while Todd Worth of San Antonio Antonian will battle for 800 and 1600 supremacy. Worth won the 800 in 2022 while Nathan Morales of San Antonio Central Catholic won the 1600 and the 3200, a feat he'll try repeating on the way to perhaps another team title.
Will 4A Houston Cypress Christian and 2A Faith Academy of Marble Falls three-peat, or will a new team emerge victorious?
GIRLS
TAPPS girls is experiencing a significant - and dominant - youth movement. While veterans like Autumn Wilson and Faith Mitchell have brought their talents to the collegiate ranks, rising stars like Bayleigh Minor, Mercy Freeman, Kaleigh Frazier, and Micaela Villarreal are making sure TAPPS' future is incredibly bright.
Will TAPPS see its first 40-foot triple jump champion? It's quite possible that two girls could achieve this milestone: Sophomore Samantha Ennin of 6A John Paul II-Plano has already jumped 40-00.75 at the indoor Texas Jumps Showcase, and Junior Mercy Freeman of 3A Tomball Rosehill Christian increased her PR to 38-07.50, also at the Texas Jumps Showcase.
At the 1A level, there are three athletes whose names jump to the top: Brazosport Christian's Emily Brown, San Angelo Cornerstone Christian's Lesli Salas and Fredericksburg Heritage's Elaina Craven. Brown looks to repeat in the 100 and the long jump, while she'll also be a force in the 200 and the triple jump. Salas, older sister of David Salas, is going for a three-peat in the 800, 1600 and 3200, a potential of nine gold medals to end her fabulous career. In 2021, she set the 1A 3200 record with a time of 11:25.56. Craven, attempting a three-peat in the high jump, owns nine career TAPPS State Championship medals: five golds, two silvers and two bronzes.
San Angelo Cornerstone's Lesli Salas
In TAPPS 2A girls, there are four athletes who should once again rule the top of the leaderboards: Amelia Anderson of Allen Academy, Faith Murphy of Marble Falls Faith Academy, Ashlyn Pesek of Shiner St. Paul, and Sophia Grinstead of Bracken Christian.
Over the past two seasons, Amelia Anderson has won seven individual gold medals and one silver, totaling 78 points for Allen Academy. She's the defending champion in the 100, 100h, 300h, and pole vault.
Allen Academy's Amelia Anderson
Faith Murphy swept the 400, 800 and 1600 - as a freshman! This season, she looks to not only repeat in all three events, but to lower her PRs of 57.29, 2:16.00 and 5:22.43. Ashlyn Pesek looks to raise the high jump bar for a third time. She enters the 2023 campaign with a 5-05.00 personal best, and Sophia Grinstead, winner of last year's shot put also looks to take the discus crown.
Marble Falls Faith Academy's Faith Murphy
The 3A girls are dominated by two-time TAPPS 3A State Champions Tomball Rosehill Christian's Kaleigh Frazier and Mercy Freeman. Frazier looks to repeat in the 100h, and she's gunning for a third-consecutive 300h title. In Mercy Freeman's short career, she's amassed 10 medals, eight golds and two silvers, of which seven are individual medals. Her 81 points is more than any other TAPPS female athlete the last two seasons. She's the defending champion in the 200 (26.02), 400 (58.06), long jump (18-02.75; increased to 19-01.50 at the Texas Jumps Showcase), and triple jump (37-05.50; increased to 38-07.50 as mentioned.) Like Bayleigh Minor in 5A, Freeman won five golds in 2022.
Tomball Rosehill Christian's Mercy Freeman
Tomball Rosehill Christian's Kaleigh Frazier
The class of 4A rests on the shoulders of Dallas Shelton's Basia Mitchell. A senior, Mitchell owns eight medals, of which seven are individual gold. She's the favorite to win the 100, 200, 100h, and the long jump.
The 5A girls are a fascinating mix of veteran talent and rising superstars. Can Isabella Godoy of Boerne Geneva capture her third-straight 800 title? Can Bayleigh Minor of Fort Bend Christian Academy win five more golds as she did her freshman season? Can Aliyah Johnson of Fort Worth Southwest Christian continue to raise her stock as a talented short sprinter? She earned five medals in 2022, scoring 33 points. Minor's five golds earned 45 points, and she's the returning individual champion in the 200, 400, long jump, and triple jump.

Fort Bend Christian Academy's Bayleigh Minor
Sophomore Micaela Villarreal of San Antonio Antonian looks to repeat in both the 1600 and 3200; this follows an outstanding Cross Country season, and sophomore Samantha Ennin looks to become the first TAPPS female to eclipse the 40-foot mark in the triple jump. Ennin is the returning champion in both horizontals, setting the 6A record last year with an 18-03.25 long jump.
San Antonio Antonian's MicaelaVillarreal
Like the boys, a couple of all-time TAPPS State Championship records could fall, most notably the triple jump mark of 39-00.75 set in 2010 by Destiny Roseman of Trinity Christian-Cedar Hill, as both Ennin and Freeman take aim, while Carrollton Christian's Erica Twiss' long jump mark of 19-03.25 is also in jeopardy by the same two jumpers.
As for team titles, can anyone in 6A dethrone St. Agnes, winners of six straight titles in impressive fashion, averaging 160 points over this period? St. Agnes may have a new head coach at the helm, but until proven otherwise, they're the favorite for lucky number seven. Both 4A Houston Cypress Christian and 3A Rosehill Christian are looking to three-peat, and before being dethroned last season by Sacred Heart-Hallettsville, the squad from Shiner St. Paul reeled off six titles in a row (2015-21.)
