The skills Abby Elmore has honed over the past several years training as a heptathlete were put on full display at the UIL State Track & Field Championships. The junior from 3A Gunter is the only athlete this season - male or female - to compete in five (5) individual events at the UIL state meet.

Abby's day started with the long jump, a fourth-place finish at 18-03.25.

She next competed in the high jump, where last season she was one of a handful of girls across the nation to hit the magical 6' mark. While she struggled early and totaled 19 jumps, she finished second with a clearance of 5-10.

With the shot put getting ready to start, Abby showed up with little time for a complete and relaxed event-specific warm up, but on her second throw, she won the event: 40-08.

Finally, a little food and relaxation back at the hotel.

Back at Mike A. Myers Stadium, Abby's evening included the sprint and intermediate hurdles, an event geared toward conditioning, and she finished second in both with times of 14.18 and 43.98 respectively.

She totaled 38 points, the highest scorer amongst ALL UIL athletes. For her efforts, she joins illustrious company. The legendary athlete from Luling, Ychlindria Spears, totaled 38 points - twice - in 2000 and in 2002. Bonnie Richardson from Rochelle won the meet by herself in 2009 with 38 points. (She won the 1A meet by herself a year earlier with 42 points.) Future All-American at the University of Houston Jolanda Jones also tallied 38 points in 1984 to win the meet by herself for Alief Elsik, and Kathy Jones scored 38 for Baird in 1972.
