2025 UIL 5A girls 3200m

From Austin, Texas May 1-3, 2024

Heading into the race it was Dana Rojas Vazquez (McAllen) who entered with the top time of anyone but had lost to Lilly Koenig (Smithson Valley) at the Region IV meet. Reese Pena (Lubbock) also figured to be near the top.
As the race broke, Rojas Vazquez immediately went to set the pace like she does so often. Eva Cragnolino (Austin LASA) followed closely in second while Koenig and Pena tucked behind in a close pack. The pack was a group of five after three laps and then down to four after a mile.
Rojas Vazquez continued to lead with 800m remaining, but Pena briefly went ahead with 600m left, but on the home stretch Cragnolino made a strong move and only Koenig was able to go with her. The long strides propelled Cragnolino forward and Koenig hung tight on the back stretch and around the last curve but Cragnolino had a little left in the tank and won in 10:30.45 thanks to a 68.89 final lap. She dropped nearly 40 seconds from her time at the Region III meet.
Koenig finished as the silver medalist in 10:31.62 and ran a 69.66 final lap. Entering the school year, Koenig was an unknown in the distance community, but she finished 10th at the State cross country meet and continued that performance during the track season. Cragnolino was the eighth place finisher at the cross country championships.
Pena held on for third place finishing in 10:35.37.
