Freshman Elin Latta Runs TX Girls Mile State Record 4:36.74

In a sensational performance on a big post-season stage, Elin Latta, a freshman from the South Texas Homeschool Heat, shattered the Texas state record in the mile with a stunning 4:36.74 at the Festival of Miles in St. Louis, Missouri. Competing in a historically fast race, Latta's performance not only elevated her to TX No. 1 all-time in the event, but also made her one of the fastest freshmen in U.S. history.

Latta's breakthrough came in the same race that saw Colorado senior Jane Hedengren (Timpview HS/CO) set the national high school mile record in 4:23.50, with California standout Hanne Thomsen (Montgomery HS/CA) also finishing under 4:30. Amid a field of top-tier athletes, Latta stayed composed, delivering a closing surge that knocked nearly four seconds off her previous best of 4:40.90, which she ran in May at the Schrader 1600 to rank TX No. 8 all-time at the time.

Her new mark eclipses the previous Texas state record of 4:36.93, set by Isabel Conde de Frankenberg (Cedar Park) in 2022. At just 15 years old, Latta now holds a time that places her among the top five freshmen in U.S. history, with the freshman national record of 4:25.16-held by Sadie Englehart of California-suddenly within reach. With two more high school seasons ahead, Latta has ample opportunity to chase that national class record.

This performance further cements Latta's breakout spring, which already included a 9:56.33 3200m victory at the Music City Track Carnival. Her mile in St. Louis confirms her status as not only one of Texas' all-time greats, but also a rising star on the national distance scene.
