Joshua Shelton's year-long tear ended atop the UIL 6A podium
2026 UIL Track and Field State Championships
The UIL 6A boys 400-meter final once again lived up to its reputation as one of the premier events in Texas high school track and field. With a field loaded with elite quarter-milers, many believed the legendary state meet record of 45.24 set by Beaumont West Brook's Marlon Ramsey in 1994 could finally be under serious threat. Pearland senior Joshua Shelton entered with the fastest qualifying mark after his eye-opening 45.21 regional performance, while Austin Lake Travis standout Abram Reagan returned after finishing third in last year's final. Add in nationally ranked athletes such as Jason Walker, Christian Witcher, and sophomore phenom Adric Evans, and the race quickly became one of the most anticipated showdowns of the meet.
From the opening gun, Reagan attacked aggressively and immediately began making up ground on Shelton stagger-wise through the first 200 meters. The Lake Travis senior looked exceptionally smooth down the backstretch and appeared determined to challenge for the title after narrowly missing the podium's top step a year ago. But Shelton remained composed and methodically worked his way back into control as the runners approached the final curve.
UIL 6A Boys 400m
At the 300-meter mark, Shelton surged slightly ahead and began separating over the final straightaway. Reagan attempted to answer and battled hard over the final 100 meters, but Shelton's strength and endurance proved too much on this day. The Pearland senior powered through the finish line in 45.86, becoming the only athlete under 46 seconds and securing one of the fastest winning performances in recent UIL history, even if the historic state meet record ultimately survived another season.
Reagan finished second in an outstanding 46.23 to medal for the second consecutive season, while Cibolo Steele senior Maverick James closed strongly for third in 47.07. Waco Midway's Keaton Washington and Royse City sophomore Adric Evans rounded out a deep field that once again showcased the incredible quarter-mile talent in Texas. Although the race fell just short of record territory, the overall quality and depth of the final reinforced why the UIL 6A boys' 400 meters remains one of the nation's premier high school sprint events.
