The Turkey Valley sophomore's 1:51.68, which he ran to win his district meet, ranks No. 14 in the U.S. He's also the returning state champion in the event. Merrell will enter the weekend with eyes on the state meet class 1A record of 1:55.40, which was set by Kade Cowan from Buckholts. With no one close to him (next-fastest seed time is 2:03.31), Merrell should comfortably win and look to compete against Bryce Hoppel at the meet of champs the weekend after the state meet. If that happens, it will be a great matchup!
