Through two laps the boys remained in a tight pack, no one was ready to take charge yet. Excitement was brewing and someone was going to step up soon. Sophomore Angel Sanchez of Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis was first to take a slight lead but everyone continued to stay tightly bunched up.
With four laps remaining separation started to occur and Senior Micah Swann of Athens took the lead followed by Chris Moreno a Junior from San Elizario.
Swann and Sanchez remained one, two with three laps to go followed closely by Junior Hudson Bennett of Burnet. Their three pack remained neck and neck with two laps left.
At the bell, Sanchez and Bennett were duking it out for the gold. Bennett overtook him at the curve and with 200 to go secured his gold medal with a time of 9:22.86, Sanchez captured the silver with a time of 9:24.11, followed by Swann for the bronze with a time of 9:39.33.
