Girls' Varsity A Race 2 mile
Julia Heymach won last year's race running a course record 11:09.
The girls varsity race has been run as a 2 mile race consistently since 2012. The 2 mile course record was set last year by one of the top runners in the country Julia Heymach who finished the course in 11:09. The Woodlands won the team battle last year placing 10, 11, 13, 16, and 17 for a total of 67 points. The next closest team was Cypress Woods who scored 93 points.
This year we could see a tough battle for first in both the individual race as well as the team race! The individual race comes down to two girls Khayla Patel, and Madie Boreman who have both run sub 18 minutes for 5k. Boreman finished 4th in the 1600m at the state meet this spring running 4:54, while Patel finished 7th running a 5:01. They also duked it out in the 3200m at the state meet. In that head to head showing Boreman came out on top finishing 3rd (10:31) with Patel right on her heals finishing 4th (10:34). During cross country, Patel has a better 5k PR but only by 4 seconds! This will definitely be a showdown to watch. A few other girls looking to be in the mix for podium finishes are sophomore Helen Roddy of Leander Rouse and junior Taylor Price of Fort Bend Ridge Point. Both of these girls have run 18:08 5k PR's.
The girls team race will be a close one as well, with three to four solid teams looking for the title. Klein Oak has a tight pack of girls who ran between 19:40 and 20:00 in 2014. If they've all improved and dropped a few seconds, they have a strong shot at a top finish. The girls from Leander Rouse will also be in the mix led by Boreman and Roddy. The Woodlands and Cinco Ranch will have a tight battle for the team championship. Both team's top-5 have all broken 19:20 for 5k!
