Watch 2019 UIL 6A 800m Champ Robert Whitmarsh Open With 1:53

It's been almost two years since the last UIL track and field state meet, but Brazoswood middle distance star Robert (Sam) Whitmarsh won the UIL 6A 2019 800m championship that year as a sophomore.

Since then, the Texas A&M University signee has competed sparingly in his premiere event. Last year, he had three races; he opened up February 21st with a 2:01.12 and then went 1:57.92 and 1:55.83 before the COVID-19 shutdown.

Today, he surpassed that with a eye opening 1:53 race where he ran pretty much solo the entire race. Whitmarsh should be considered the favorite to win the state title once again this season, but he has a hefty challenge to do so.

Whitmarsh could put himself in rare air this year. With basically the entire outdoor season remaining, he could put himself in the Texas boy's All-Time top 10 800m runners.
