Meet Preview: Region 4 Cross Country Championships

Geovany Cisneros and the Harlingen boys qualified for state last year; they look to do it again this season

Class 6A

Kennady Fontenot (New Braunfels) is the top returner from last year's 4-6A race. She is also one of this season's best performers with her 18:23.

Austin Westlake freshman Sophie Wollan is another top performer as she comes into regionals with a 17:55 top mark

In the 4-6A girls race, there are nine girls with best performances within 10 seconds of one another, making this anybody's kind or race.

The girls team race could be interesting also. Vandegrift and Round Rock seem to be the top two teams. Both teams are talented and both are ranked in the top 10 in the most recent Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas (CCCAT) Poll.

Behind them, Should be New Braunfels, Smithson Valley, Westlake, and Economedes going for the remaining qualifying spots.

Without a doubt, the boys 4-6A race will go to Kevin Sanchez (Austin Vandegrift). Sanchez has the state's best time of the year at 14:44.

Behind Sanchez, things will be very interesting. Skyler Roper (San Antonio Brandeis), Hector Solis (PSJA North), and Michael Herrera (San Antonio Holmes) are the top returners from last year's race.

Include Geovany Cisneros (Harlingen), Rogelio Aguirre (Mission) and 11 other guys under 15:50, this race could get as thick as it usually is. If the weather is as humid as we know it to be, there might not be enough oxygen to sufficiently go around for the likely congested boys pack of front runners.

Who is the best boy's team in the region will be decided on Monday. On paper it's Round Rock followed by San Antonio Brandeis. Brandeis topped Round Rock earlier in the season at the Islander Splash.

Vandegrift is trending in the right direction as team in the latter parts of the season as has been Eagle Pass and San Antonio Reagan. Then there is San Antonio Johnson who has been the best team in South Texas for the last couple of years.

Tune in for the UIL Region 4-6A boys race to see all of the state meet qualifying positions that are all mostly up for grabs.
