Last year, as just a sophomore, Ashton Torns won the UIL 6A long jump competition state championship and he competed in the 100m. Torns is preparing to defend his title this weekend when he enters the Mike A. Myers stadium on the campus of the University of Texas.

The Austin Westlake product will not be moving forward without his fair share of controversy and adversity.

Unlike 2021, the junior will not be lining up for the 100m and he will not be in the 200m. Although he qualified for the Region 4-6A Championships, things did not happen as expected them to.

On day one, the 100m prelims put a hitch in the game plan when he was disqualified without even competing. When the gun sounded to start the race, there was a false start calling the race back.

After some confusion amongst the officials, Torns was disqualified along with another runner. It is rare to see more than one runner eliminated from a race for a false start. The false start is usually attributed to the runner who is responsible for the infraction and not subsequent runners who react. Nevertheless, in Region 4-6A, that is what happened and the All-State runner was the second runner to be ejected from that one firing of the gun.

Torns had to gather himself and his emotions to get back on course for rest of the preliminary rounds.

At the end of the weekend, Torns would again punch his ticket to the state meet in the long jump. He'll have to fend off some outstanding competitors who combined with him will help make this possibly one of the best events this upcoming weekend.
