UIL 2A Meet Preview

Girls Team Outlook

Mason, Goldthwaite, Shiner, Johnson City LBJ, Cross Roads, Groveton, Douglass, Union Grove, Hamilton, Muenster, Hico, Nocona, Christoval, Gruver, Panhandle, New Deal

Christoval is Good! They ran with a 35 second compression from their number one runner to their fifth. This might be the best Hamilton girls team ever. They won Region 2-2A with a 12:56 team average and a 47 second split.

Muenster was runner-up at Region 2-2A and with a 12:57 team average they could be looking at a trophy in 2022.

Hico, Grover, Panhandle, Cross Roads, Mason, and Goldthwaite are all in good positions for podium finishes.

Girls Individual Outlook

The girls individual race looks to be good and wide open.

Regional champions are Anallely Moreno, Cameron Belcher, Cassity Turner, Eleana Campos, Emma Walterscheid, Jaime Bella.

Belcher enters with the top regional time of 12:06 from a wet and sloppy Region 2 course. She also has a sub 12 minute run in the 3,200m this cross country season as she looks to redeem herself from last year.

Walterscheid finished in second to Belcher with the second fastest time of the round. She finished ninth last year at the state meet and will be in the mix with the other regional champions.

Moreno's time of 12:34 is good for the Mae Simmons course as she looks to get in the mix in Round Rock. Bella who was second at Region 1-2A is the highest returner from last year's state meet. Her 2021 UIL 2A runner-up finish as a freshman proves she handled Old Settler's well.

Turner, the Region 3-2A champion looks to improve from her 20th place at the state meet last year and Region 4 champ Campos was eight last year and she could also have her sights on the top of the podium.

Boys Team Outlook

Plains, Sundown, New Deal, Booker, Wolfe City, Hamilton, Poolville, Hawley, Tenaha, Riesel, New Summerfield, Douglass, SA Stacey, Premont, Santa Maria, Port Aransas

Region 1-2A champions Plains won by nearly 86 points to earn the regional crown. Their 17:46 team average is good enough to win if they can survive the 2:07 split. Their top three runners are solid, but the four and five spots will have to come up big to get the team win.

Region 3-2A champs Tenaha is strong and their 1:11 split could be what gets them to the top of the podium. They have a 17:46 team average. If they get a low 18 minute run from the five spot, then they'll have a good day.

Wolfe City could be the team to beat. They have a legit No. 1 runner and the four through five runners are close to running within 60 seconds. If the five runner has a good run, they could win it all.

Boys Individual Outlook

Sawyer Hamilton, Jhoan Menijvar, Caden Thurman, Francis Patanpatan, Misael Hernandez, Evan Plata, Connor Bartek, Taylor Warrick

This race will come down to Caden Thurman and Connor Bartek. They finished second and third respectively at the 2021 state meet.

Thurman has been running out of his mind this year. He has three sub 16 minute races including a 14:57 from the Arkansas Chile Pepper Festival where he finished fifth.

He was the runner-up at the Garmin MIleSplit TX Inv., third at Lovejoy, and regional champ. He looks the part of a state champion.

Connor Bartek will be the biggest hurdle for Thurman's win. Bartek only has one loss this season with four sub 16 minute races on the season.
