TAPPS 2023 State Meet Recap

TAPPS 5A

Girls

This was another race where both the champion and runner-up finisher from last year's championships are no longer competing. Abby Metzger graduated and Madison Larsen is competing in the UIL.

However, Metzger's role has been replaced by Emma Goetz . . . literally. The new Tyler Grace star is the new TAPPS 5A girls state champion, making it two girls in a row to hold the state title for the school.

Goetz won with a 12:07 to top Amelia Weenig (Austin Regents) who was runner-up with a time of 12:27 after placing fifth last year.

Rounding out the top five was Madi Schmitt (San Antonio Christian), Avery Frank (St. Dominic Savio Catholic), and Madeleine Holland (Liberty Christian).

Tyler Grace followed last year's second place with a third place team finish this year.

Boys

The TAPPS 5A boys was loaded with some of the state's top runners. Last year's runner-up Marcelo Parra (San Antonio TMI) climbed the ranks to win the state title with his 16:09 run.

San Antonio Christian sophomore Adrian Rule was third last year and moved up one spot to runner-up with his time of 16:13.

The 2022 state champion, Franco Parra (San Antonio TMI) was able to put together a third place race in 16:24.

Twin brothers Matthew Gaitan and Marcus Gaitan from Houston Lutheran South were the fourth and fifth place finishers.

San Antonio TMI lost their state championship last year to San Antonio Christian by a six point margin.

That race was tight, but this year's race was even tighter as TMI was able to recover from the loss ini 2022 to get the win by only one point (54<55) over San Antonio Christian.

Lutheran South improved from their eleventh place finish in 2022 to take third place this year. They went from 299 points scored and a 19:09 average to 86 points and a 17:15 average.
