Wrapping Up San Antonio District Meets

District meet week is always the most hectic and exciting week of the season since it is the last meet that features full JV and varsity squads. Last week, the wind swept in which led to sprint times that were either very fast or slower than would be expected. If the weather calms down this week expect the times level out.

The Best Thing I Saw

The best thing I saw this week was the District 26-5A girls 800m race. Smithson Valley's Mia Perez was the favorite to win the race and she pushed the pace in the early going. Savanah Moya of New Braunfels and Perez's teammate, Lilly Koenig, were able to maintain a reasonable distance behind Perez. Perez was able to keep pushing and she still won the race in 2:10.08 and she dragged along both Moya and Koenig who each ran big personal bests. Moya finished in 2:10.64 and Koenig crossed the line in 2:11.24. There is a chance that all three could make the State meet since they all currently rank in the top 4 in UIL 5A. However, McAllen's Yaneli Rocha has run 2:11.49 this season meaning that Region IV has four of the top five half-milers in the State.

Clark's Rachel Nwankwo starred in the jumps going 18-6 in the long jump and 38-7 in the triple jump to win both events. Her teammate, Jayla Flemons, showed she is one of the top 400m and 800m runners in the Region with her win in both events. The Brandeis 4x200m relay ran 1:39.54 and was led by London Graham who also won the 200m in 24.47.
