Lathan Lewter from Canyon dominated the 2025 UIL 4A Boys 3200m State Championship from the start, taking the lead early and never looking back. After a strong performance at the Texas Relays earlier in the month, Lewter came out aggressively, running the first lap in a blistering 66 seconds. His early pace was set by his teammate Ryan Fernandez, the 2024 runner-up, and Armando Morales (La Feria), who both stayed close in the chase. By the 800m mark, Fernandez had moved into third place, with Lewter still leading the way, followed closely by Morales. As Lewter passed the 1000m mark in 2:50, it was clear he was in control, with Fernandez and Morales trailing just behind.
At the 1600m point, Lewter was in 4:34, a solid time that saw him maintain his lead over Fernandez and Morales, who were clocked at 4:36. That's when Lewter began to pull away, opening up a gap of five meters that quickly grew to nearly 15 meters as he surged into the final stages of the race. Behind him, Fernandez and Morales battled for second place, with Victor Aviles (Burnet) and Tyrus Cowan (Sunnyvale) running in tandem for fourth and fifth. Lewter's pacing remained steady, as he posted consistent lap times of 69, 69, and 68 seconds in the latter part of the race. His final lap, completed in 70 seconds, was enough to seal the victory with a time of 9:11.83, securing the gold medal and leaving his competitors behind.
The race for second place, however, was far from settled. After the bell lap, Aviles surged ahead, using his impressive 800m speed to close the gap and move from fifth to second place. He ran a blistering 2:13 for the final half mile and finished with a 1:01 last lap, securing the silver medal with a time of 9:15.96. Meanwhile, Morales and Fernandez continued their battle for the final podium spot, with Morales pulling away in the final 400m. Morales closed with a 1:03 lap to edge Fernandez by a slim margin, finishing in third place with a time of 9:17.00. Fernandez, who had been in contention throughout, ultimately finished in fourth with a time of 9:17.58. It was a thrilling race, with Lewter's tactical approach and strong finish earning him the championship, while the battles for second and third provided plenty of drama down the stretch.
