Region 4-5A Boys enter the second mile of the race
The UIL 5A Boys Regional Championships took place this past week at three different sites across Texas, each offering distinct course layouts and environmental conditions that shaped the outcome of the races. Though every athlete competed over the same 5,000-meter distance, the variety in terrain from the dry, rolling plains of Lubbock and the coastal humidity of Corpus Christi to the flatter, faster surface in Arlington, meant no two regional meets were alike.
Weather added another layer of complexity. Some races were run in brisk, cool temperatures ideal for distance running, while others faced heat in the 80s and 90s, or stiff winds that tested endurance and strategy. These factors made direct comparisons between regions nearly impossible. Still, every course saw impressive efforts, tactical races, and standout performances.
In the recap that follows, we highlight the top teams and individuals from each regional meet, not to compare results across sites, but to recognize the excellence and grit displayed by athletes statewide, each competing under their own unique race-day conditions.
The Region 1-5A Boys Championship brought elite-level racing to Lubbock, with fast times, team battles, and fierce competition for individual state qualification. The race featured a dominant front pack and a string of sub-16:20 finishes that showcased the depth of this region.
Tyler Connelly of Aledo claimed the individual title in impressive fashion, clocking 15:27.30 on the 5K course-a time that sets the tone heading into the state meet. He was chased by a strong Grapevine duo, Juan Gallegos and Andrew DeYoung, who finished second and third in 15:37.40 and 15:50.60, respectively. These two have been the steady heartbeat of Grapevine's No. 1-ranked squad all season, and once again, they delivered on the big stage.
Individual state qualifiers outside the top four teams showed serious grit. Abdihafit Mohamed (Amarillo Palo Duro) earned fourth overall and was the top individual qualifier with 16:02.20. He was closely followed by Andrew Truax (El Paso) and Arturo Rodriguez (Lubbock High), both clocking low-16 performances. Also qualifying were Gannon Dolan (Granbury), John Silva (Denton), and a strong Arlington Heights duo of Samuel Alexander and Findlay Belk, giving Region 1 a solid group of independent talents heading to Round Rock.

Region 1-5A Boys XC Championship Recap - Lubbock
The team competition was expected to be a showdown between some of the state's top programs, and Grapevine lived up to its No. 1 ranking, dominating the field with just 31 points. The Mustangs' top five runners all finished in the top 11 team places, led by Gallegos and DeYoung up front. Their team time of 1:20:34.90 (16:07 avg) was not only dominant but one of the fastest regional team averages across all of 5A.
Aledo delivered a strong performance as well, earning the runner-up spot with 88 points. Connelly's individual title gave the Bearcats a low stick, and a tight pack from runners 2-5 sealed their qualification with a team time of 1:23:36.30.
Colleyville Heritage took third place with 171 points, showing consistent mid-pack strength. Michael Steinkamp led the way with a top-20 finish, while the rest of the scoring five crossed within 47 seconds of each other, a tight compression that helped them fend off challengers.
Joshua claimed the final state-qualifying spot in fourth, scoring 199 points. Their top five averaged 17:30.9, led by senior Edward Hernandez and backed up by a reliable group of experienced runners. Their finish marks a major step forward for the program.
With Grapevine continuing its charge toward a potential state title and three other strong teams rounding out the region's delegation, Region 1 sends a deep and talented group to the state championships.

The Region 2-5A Boys Championship delivered a deep and thrilling contest that featured impressive front-running and fierce competition for state qualification. Andrew Malan of Frisco Lebanon Trail took top honors individually, winning the race in 15:51.72. A consistent standout across the state this season, Malan confirmed his elite status, pulling away in the final stretch to hold off strong challengers.
Right behind him came the Lucas Lovejoy duo of Tristan Arceneau and Joseph Reid, finishing second and third with nearly identical times of 15:55.33 and 15:55.39, respectively. Their aggressive pace early helped string out the field and cemented their roles as key team scorers.
Among the individual qualifiers not on a top-four team, the list was loaded with talent: Joshua Loera (North Mesquite), Parker Cathey and Alex Roeren (Frisco Reedy), and Spencer Haag (Highland Park) all finished under 16:30, while Jaxson Hart and Christopher Riley Case (Walnut Grove) followed close behind. Region 2-5A Boys XC Championship Recap - Arlington
While the individual race saw tight finishes at the front, the team competition was a strategic battle between tightly packed squads. In the end, it was Dallas Woodrow Wilson who came out on top, winning the regional title with 88 points and a team average of 16:45.48. Their top five runners were separated by less than 49 seconds, led by Hayden Gaunt's fourth-place finish in 16:15. That kind of compression proved crucial in edging out strong programs.
It is fair to note, that we did not hold Wilson in high enough regard to win the regional title; nevertheless, their talent broke through.
Lucas Lovejoy, despite an up-and-down regular season, showed up when it mattered most, perhaps with Coach Kelly's experience being a key factor. Led by the 2-3 punch of Arceneau and Reid, they secured the runner-up spot with 106 points, and actually posted the fastest team average of the day (16:39.43). Their pack held just enough to hold off challengers.
Frisco Wakeland secured third place with 114 points, relying on steady finishes from senior Bradley Vacek and junior Adam Lane. Their team spread of just over a minute helped them survive a tight scoring margin.
The final qualifying spot went to McKinney North, who edged out several contenders with 128 points. Led by Rhett Hulin's top-10 finish and supported by three runners under 17:20, their solid pack performance proved enough to punch their ticket to state.

Returning champion Aiden Fitzgerald of Friendswood proved he's peaking at just the right time, defending his Region 3-5A title dominantly with a time of 15:07.0. Fitzgerald, the 2023 state meet runner-up, has clearly elevated his form, blazing through the fast course and distancing himself from a deep and talented field.
Behind him, Colby Huntress of Austin Anderson and Jaxon Asbill of Dayton both posted 15:12 finishes in a dead heat for second and third. Huntress's consistent season continues, while Asbill showed big-race toughness in a tightly contested finish. Matthew Morales of Georgetown and Aiden Lowery of Friendswood rounded out the top five, with Morales running a composed 15:32 and Lowery just behind at 15:41.
A key moment came late in the race when Zachary Mangum (Georgetown), who had been running strong in the lead pack, had a slight stumble in the final 100 meters. Even so, he recovered quickly and delivered a crucial sixth-place finish for his team - a gutsy, team-first performance that helped lock in their trip to state.
The individual qualifiers not on advancing teams included several standout performances, such as John Fowler (Beaumont West Brook), Jonah Harris (Montgomery), and James Ellison (College Station A&M Consolidated), each running under 16:00. The individual race depth in Region 3 was clear; many of these names could be in the mix again at the state meet.

Region 3-5A Boys XC Championship Recap - Arlington
In one of the more evenly matched team battles across the state, Georgetown East View claimed the Region 3-5A title behind a low-scoring front pack and tight grouping. Led by Brayden Lazenby and Kingston Wilson, both under 16:00, East View scored 110 points with an average time of 16:24.9 to seal the win.
Austin LASA took runner-up honors with 120 points, thanks to a solid 1-2 finish from Liam Brandyberry and Joaquin Gonzalez, and a deep, consistent middle pack. Their ability to place five runners inside the top 50 made the difference in a tight team competition.
The third-place spot came down to a tie between Friendswood and Georgetown, both finishing with 139 points. But Friendswood took the regional podium spot via the sixth-runner tiebreaker, with Logan Huber's 69th place edging out Georgetown's sixth man by a wide margin. Fitzgerald's individual title and Lowery's top-five finish carried weight, but it was the depth across their top six that sealed it.
Georgetown still advances to state by virtue of their fourth-place finish, demonstrating the value of resilience and depth. With strong youth performances from freshmen like Wake Caskey and Lincoln Sypniewski, their future remains bright.

Nathan Salinas of Mission Sharyland returned to the Region 4-5A Championships with a familiar strategy, and once again, it paid off. Employing the same patience and tactics that brought him success in 2023, Salinas controlled the pace from the front just after passing mile marker and surged away late to comfortably win his second straight regional title with a time of 15:56.38.
The Nava brothers from Weslaco East, Aaron Nava and Alexander Nava, charged hard from the gun and locked in second and third place with matching times of 16:07. The aggressive early pacing paid off, helping their team claim the regional crown. Jack Gurwitz of McAllen steadily worked his way through the pack to finish fourth, followed closely by Ethan Herrera of Lockhart, who closed strong to round out the top five.
The individual state qualifiers not on the top four advancing teams showcased impressive depth. Names like Kai Sepulveda (Harlingen South), Azael Davila (La Joya Palmview), and Malik Dekli (Leander) were all under 16:33, showing just how competitive Region 4 was from top to bottom.

Region 4-5A Boys XC Championship Recap - Corpus Christi
The team race played out largely as expected, with a twist. Weslaco East, who had been trailing McAllen in head-to-heads all season, flipped the script at the most important time, winning the Region 4-5A team title with a dominant front pack and a final team score of 46 points. Their 1-2 finish from the Nava brothers, plus three more finishers inside the top 25, gave them a clear edge.
McAllen, one of the top-ranked teams in 5A throughout the year, struggled to match their usual standard on Monday. Despite a strong top three, their fourth and fifth runners lagged slightly, and the team settled for second place with 61 points. While it wasn't their best performance, it was still enough to comfortably advance to the state meet. With the level of consistency they've shown throughout the year, one has to wonder if they are at full strength.
Boerne Champion claimed third with 127 points, relying on a solid 17-31 spread and tight team packing. Donna rounded out the state qualifiers with a fourth-place finish, scoring 182 points with a team average of 17:38. The top four teams proved why they were considered favorites - each bringing enough depth and consistency to punch their ticket to Round Rock.
