Start of the 2025 Region 1-6A girls race
The UIL 6A girls Regional Championships unfolded this past week across four unique sites in Texas, each offering distinct course profiles and race-day conditions that played a significant role in shaping the performances. Though all athletes raced the same 5,000-meter distance, the variation in environment, from the thin air and rolling terrain of Lubbock's high-altitude course to the coastal humidity of Corpus Christi, and the flat, fast surfaces in Waco and Arlington, meant that each regional meet offered a different challenge.
Is altitude a defining factor in Region 1, hosted in Lubbock, especially on days with great temps? Teams and individuals had to contend not only with the hilly terrain but also with reduced oxygen levels, adding a physiological layer to an already grueling race. Meanwhile, runners in Corpus Christi (Region IV) faced stifling humidity, which tested heat acclimation and hydration strategy. The meets in Regions II and III saw a mix of crisp, cool mornings and sun-drenched afternoons, conditions that benefitted some athletes and burdened others depending on race timing.
Weather variability added to the complexity. While some races were run in optimal, cool conditions ideal for distance running, others faced temperatures in the 80s and 90s, coupled with stiff headwinds or sun exposure that forced athletes to adapt their pacing and tactics on the fly. These factors make direct comparisons between regional results difficult, but they also highlight the resilience and adaptability of Texas's top high school runners.
Across the state, each course became a proving ground. Whether it was a blistering solo effort, a tight team battle, or a hard-fought chase pack, every region showcased elite-level racing. In the recap that follows, we'll highlight the top teams and individuals from each of the four UIL 6A regional meets, not to rank performances against one another, but to celebrate the grit, preparation, and athletic excellence displayed by athletes from every corner of the state, each facing their own set of challenges.
In one of the fastest and most competitive regions in Texas, it was no surprise to see an elite group of athletes battle it out for individual glory. Defending 6A state champion Macy Wingard (Denton Braswell) reminded everyone why she's a two-time titleholder, blazing through the 5K in 16:54.20, a time that currently ranks among the fastest in the state this season. Close behind was Maya Easterwood of Coppell, another 2023 top-10 state returner, finishing in 17:21.40.
The field was packed with seasoned veterans and rising stars. Adeline Bennett of Flower Mound, herself a top-10 finisher at last year's state meet, led her team with a strong third-place showing (17:58.00), followed by standout freshmen and underclassmen like Kylie Vega (El Paso Eastwood) and Emily Orr (El Paso Franklin), who rounded out the top five.
Given the strength of this region, it was no surprise that it only took 14 places to account for all 10 state individual qualifiers, further evidence of Region 1's depth.

Region 1-6A Girls XC Championship Recap - Lubbock
Flower Mound once again asserted its dominance, claiming its sixth consecutive regional title with a commanding performance. Led by Adeline Bennett (3rd) and backed by teammates Mckayla Kohutek (5th) and Eliana Rivera (13th), Flower Mound scored just 42 points with a tight pack and a team average of 18:24.8. Their impressive spread and depth showed why they've also won the past five UIL 6A state championships and remain the clear favorite heading into Round Rock.
Carroll High School, the last team to win a 6A state title before Flower Mound's reign, claimed second place with 107 points. Their squad was led by Luna Gutierrez in 9th overall and featured consistent pack running to secure their spot at state.
Northwest Nelson and Keller rounded out the final two team qualifiers, placing 3rd and 4th, respectively. Nelson, with 121 points, used a tight top-five led by freshman Lyla Calaway, while Keller's solid fifth-place runner helped them narrowly secure the last state berth with 168 points.

The Region 2-6A girls' individual race featured an elite field of Texas distance running talent, and it lived up to expectations. Leading the charge was Laney Barnes of Houston Cypress Woods, who returned to her dominant form and captured the individual title in an outstanding time of 17:09.53, separating herself from the field by nearly 40 seconds. At the beginning of the year, Barnes wasn't considered to be a possible regional title winner, but after her move back to Houston from Virginia, she quickly announced herself and is now a state title threat.
Following Barnes was another uncaculated top finisher when the season began, Evangeline Williams, the Wylie East sophomore who ran an impressive 17:48.76 to take second overall and lead her team to a qualifying spot. Bridgeland's Hope Smith, is yet another non-predicted top runner, and The Woodlands' Naomi Weller also turned in sub-18-minute performances, placing third and fourth, respectively, and giving their squads strong scoring starts. The depth of this race was evident as the top 10 finishers were all under 18:45, showcasing the competitiveness of this regional.
The individual qualifiers not on the top four teams were exceptionally strong. Veterans like Jordyn Rotter (Klein Oak) and rising stars like Reese Bartos (Waxahachie) and Sophia Domosiaris (Conroe Grand Oaks) added depth and high-end speed to the at-large individual field heading to state.

The Region 3-6A individual race was a showdown of seasoned veterans and rising stars. Sophie Peterson of Houston Memorial claimed the individual regional title with a time of 18:02.8, holding off Katy Taylor's Casey Scherpereel by a hair in one of the most thrilling finishes of the day.
The two were stride-for-stride nearly the entire way, finishing just 0.2 seconds apart. Behind them, Katy's Lauren Acopa led the charge for the eventual team champions with a strong third-place finish, clocking in at 18:14.3.
Several familiar names were right in the mix. Missy Han and Caroline Reina both continued their strong seasons with sub-18:25 finishes, while Jannie Cardenas of Manvel and Brianna Padilla of Pearland Dawson also posted state-worthy times. With such a competitive top 10, the bar for individual state qualification was especially high in Region 3, showcasing the depth of talent in this part of the state.
