BOYS
Dillon Mitchell of Sheldon King heads to Austin as one of the top-ranked boys sprinters in the country. The sophomore ran 10.13 in the 100m at regionals - picking up where he left off after setting an under-18 world record indoors, 6.59. At the Bluebonnet Invitational in March he ran 9.88, wind-aided at +5.8, and followed that with a wind-legal 10.10 at the Texas Relays. His season best in the 200m is 20.22, also from Bluebonnet. At regionals he finished third in the 200m in 20.60, behind the two athletes we'll highlight next.
Blake Hamilton of Katy Tompkins won the 200m at regionals in 20.27 and owns the top all-conditions 200m mark in Texas and the country - 19.90 at the Bluebonnet Invitational. Hamilton competed in TAPPS last year, where his best was 20.91w at the state championships.
Kaleb Samuels of Shadow Creek ran 20.64 in the 200m at regionals for 4th across all classifications. Justin Stewart of Ft Worth Arlington Heights ran 20.73 for 7th.
Joshua Shelton of Pearland leads the nation in the 400m. At regionals he ran 45.21, a massive jump from what he ran at the same meet last year 45.93. (At last year's state meet he ran 47.09.) The 400m field behind him is deep. Abram Reagan of Austin Lake Travis ran 45.82 for second at regionals. Jason Walker of Shadow Creek ran 46.00 for third. Brandon Gilmore of Mansfield Timberview ran 46.25 and Ky-Ri Bonner of El Paso Hanks ran 46.47.
GIRLS
Brooke Lloyd of Humble Summer Creek ran 51.98 in the 400m at regionals - sub-52, a personal best, and the top mark in Texas. She sits at US #4. Last year she won the 6A title at state in 52.23. This season she has been consistently sub-53, running 52.33 at the Florida Relays and 52.60 at the Bluebonnet before lowering it further at regionals.
Ashtyn Lewis of Iowa Colony ran 52.35 in the 400m at regionals for second and 23.18 in the 200m, also for second in that event. Her 23.18 sits 5th in Texas and 11th nationally. Last year she ran 52.75 at UIL State as a 5A competitor.
McKenzi Roberson of Shadow Creek led all classifications in both the 100m and 200m at regionals, running 11.39 and 22.98 in the prelims - both wind-aided. Her wind-legal bests this season are 11.69 in the 100m and 23.19 in the 200m, with a legal 23.49 in the finals at regionals. Last year as a sophomore she ran 22.96 at the UIL State Championships for second place, TX No. 4 all-time in the 200m. She is the defending state runner-up.
Zahria Bernard of Red Oak won the 5A 100m title last year as a freshman in 11.35. Now a sophomore, she has run 11.32 in the 100m this season at area - TX#11, US#18 - and 23.27 in the 200m at area and 23.39 at regionals. Saniyah Miller of Lancaster ran 23.41 in the 200m at regionals for 4th. Phoenix Glover of Fort Bend Marshall ran 23.52 for 6th, wind-aided.
Lily Pierrot of Lancaster ran 11.40 in the 100m at regionals for second. Sanyah Keeton of Duncanville ran 11.41 for third. Lancaster puts both Pierrot and Miller into the sprint finals - a school worth tracking for team points in Austin.
