Colton Vrazel is demonstrative with arms wide open in his UIL 2A 3200m boys win
The UIL 2A boys 3200-meter championship entered Austin carrying significant expectations after two consecutive years of historically fast races. In 2024, Caden Thurman set the classification record at 9:06.21, and last season Marco Cunningham followed with another elite winning mark of 9:14.
While this year's field featured several sub-10 regional qualifiers led by Bosqueville twins Cristiano Tinoco and Juan Tinoco, Danbury senior Colton Vrazel, and Mason's Cooper Ratliff, the race developed far differently than the aggressive pace seen in recent years. Instead, the opening laps unfolded tactically, with Windthorst's Braidan Messineo and Juan Tinoco leading the tightly packed field through a relaxed opening kilometer.
By the half-mile mark, the Tinoco brothers had moved firmly to the front, bringing the field through 800 meters in 2:30-2:33 range, while Plains senior Christian Sanchez joined them near the lead. The pace remained conservative by state-meet standards as the lead pack rolled through 1200 meters in 3:45-3:47 and the mile in approximately 5:02. Rather than stringing the field out, the slower tempo allowed six runners to remain in contention deep into the race, setting the stage for a dramatic final kilometer.
UIL 2A Boys 3200m
The race changed completely with just over 650 meters remaining. Danbury senior Colton Vrazel, who had patiently hovered around fifth place for most of the race, made the decisive move of the day. Vrazel surged from the pack and rapidly created separation, opening nearly a 10-meter lead by the bell lap after splitting 1:10.32 from 2400 to 2800 meters. Cristiano and Juan Tinoco attempted to respond, while Sanchez and Tenaha senior Adrian Ramirez also stayed within striking distance entering the final straightaway.
Over the last 250 meters, Ramirez unleashed a strong finishing kick, passing both Sanchez and Cristiano Tinoco to move into second place, but Vrazel's move had already broken the race open. The Danbury senior closed in 1:03.86 over the final lap to secure the state championship in 9:45.95, becoming the only athlete under 9:46. Ramirez followed in 9:49.96, while Sanchez edged Cristiano Tinoco by just two hundredths for third, 9:50.74 to 9:50.76. Juan Tinoco completed the top six in 9:57.47 after leading much of the middle stages.
Although the race never approached the record-setting pace of the previous two championships, it instead delivered a highly tactical and strategic battle that rewarded patience and closing speed. Vrazel's perfectly timed move over the final kilometer ultimately proved decisive, turning a tightly packed championship race into a memorable state title performance.
