Burton's Kayden Patterson Wins UIL 2A Boys 300H State Title

The UIL 2A boys 300-meter hurdles final brought together one of the deepest hurdle fields in recent classification history, with eight athletes entering under 40 seconds from the regional championships. Although Cale Kassen's long-standing state meet record of 37.10 from 2018 remained untouched, the race featured several serious contenders led by Burton junior Kayden Patterson, Stamford sophomore Slayden Young, and Wink's Layne Lusby, all of whom entered with season-best performances near the top of the state rankings. One year after Junction's Aiden Cardwell won the title in 39.18, the 2026 field appeared capable of producing another fast championship race.

From the start, Young attacked the opening hurdles aggressively from lane six and quickly established himself at the front through the first two barriers. But Patterson, running in lane five, immediately matched the pace and steadily closed the stagger around the curve. By the time the field reached the final three hurdles, Patterson had fully seized control of the race with superior speed between barriers and cleaner rhythm over the top. Once he took the lead, the Burton junior never gave it back.

Patterson powered through the homestretch to win the state championship in 38.63, one of the fastest marks in the classification this season. Young held on strongly for second in 39.40, while the battle for the remaining medals became chaotic over the final hurdle. Patterson clipped and fell over the final barrier while still maintaining enough momentum to secure the victory, but the incident dramatically altered the fight behind him. Junction senior Brock Bierschwale capitalized late to move into third place in 39.72, narrowly ahead of Bangs senior Cason Tidwell at 39.83.

The race ultimately showcased the remarkable depth of UIL 2A hurdling, with eight athletes breaking 40.5 seconds in the final. Patterson's aggressive move over the final hurdles proved decisive, and despite the stumble at the finish, the Burton junior delivered a championship performance worthy of one of the strongest hurdle fields the classification has seen in years.
