Refugio lowers the classification state meet record in the 4x200 relay
2026 UIL Track and Field State Championships
We might need to start calling Refugio the Cheetahs rather than the Lady Cats after the performance they put on in the sprints at the UIL 2A girls' championship.
After winning the 4x100m relay and taking the top two spots in the 100m, the quartet of Jazmyn Howard, Caytlin Brown, Ja'zae-lynne Lewis, and Carlie Mcclain destroyed the meet record set last year by the exact same Refugio squad. This year, they nearly broke 1:40.00 and had to settle for a winning time of 1:40.01. The victory gave them 58 points in those three events and a stranglehold on first place in the team standings.
The battle for second place was fierce, with Falls City, Panhandle, and Tioga all in contention. Kenley Wiatrek proved to be the difference as she got the baton in fifth place and ran down three teams in front of her and clipped Panhandle right at the finish line in 1:42.79 to 1:42.82. Tioga ended up in fourth place with a time of 1:43.05.
Last year, it was Panhandle finishing in second place just ahead of Falls City. Refugio was the gold medalist in 1:41.28, which set the meet record at the time.
