Jordan Gutierrez Wins The UIL 2A Boys 200m For Second Gold

Jordan Gutierrez rounds the corner in the UIL 2A Boys 200m

The UIL 2A boys 200-meter final once again showcased the sprint depth within the classification, even as Stanley Kerr's long-standing state meet record of 20.64 from 1985 remained untouched. After Hawley's Franc Patanpatan won last year's title in 21.54 in one of the closest finishes of the meet, the 2026 championship arrived without a clear runaway favorite. Hico senior Jordan Gutierrez entered with the fastest regional qualifying mark at 21.49, while Abernathy's Caden Bird, Haskell's Haegen Pinkerton, and Coleman senior Braylon Stewart all brought strong sprint credentials into Austin.

From the gun, Bird exploded well out of lane four and matched Gutierrez stride for stride through the opening curve. Gutierrez, however, gradually began taking control as the stagger unwound entering the straightaway. Once he hit the homestretch, the Hico senior separated decisively from the field with superior top-end speed and sprint mechanics. While Pinkerton mounted a strong challenge over the final 100 meters and closed quickly from the outside lanes, Gutierrez had already created enough cushion to stay safely in front.
