Caden Klingelhefer came out of nowhere to win the UIL 2A Boys 800m
2026 UIL Track and Field State Championships
The UIL 2A boys 800-meter championship once again delivered a tactical and tightly contested race, even if Dallas Rushing's long-standing conference record of 1:52.25 from 2013 remained untouched. After the graduation of 2025 champion Karl Patanpatan of Hawley, the event entered Austin wide open, with several contenders arriving separated by only a few seconds in the regional qualifying rounds. Premont senior Haven Pena, Hamilton junior Colton DeLaGarza, Mason junior Caden Klingelhefer, and Riesel senior Matthew Hawkins all looked capable of emerging from the pack in what shaped up to be a classic championship-style race.
From the opening 200 meters, Hawkins took control of the pace, pushing the field through an aggressive opening quarter around 26 seconds while Pena stayed close on his shoulder. The field remained compact through the first lap, crossing in the 58-59 second range with very little separation among the nine finalists. Down the backstretch on the second lap, DeLaGarza made the first major move of the race. The Hamilton standout surged hard approaching 600 meters and seized the lead, carrying momentum into the final curve after splitting approximately 1:31 through 600m.

As the leaders entered the homestretch, however, Mason's Caden Klingelhefer began unleashing the strongest kick in the field. Sitting seventh at the halfway point in 59.22, Klingelhefer methodically worked his way through traffic before exploding over the final 100 meters. His closing speed proved decisive as he stormed past DeLaGarza in the final strides to capture the state championship in 1:57.77, finishing with a strong 58.55 second final lap.
DeLaGarza held on for runner-up honors in 1:57.90 after leading much of the second lap, while Hawkins' aggressive early pace still earned him third in 1:58.75. Seagraves senior Yandel Meza and Pena rounded out the top five, with five athletes dipping under two minutes in a deep and competitive final. Although the race lacked the record-setting times seen in recent years, it instead showcased the tactical patience and finishing speed that often define championship 800-meter racing - and in the end, Klingelhefer's final kick proved unbeatable.
