Tank Tuesday: Training & 4lb Burger Challenges

2/16/15-Monday

Workout: 1 mile w/u, 6 mile tempo, 1mile c/d.

Mileage: 8 miles

I ran by myself on the roads in a rainy, windy, and cold day. It was just a nasty day to run. The goal was to run hard for 2 miles, hammer the next 3, and then back off again for the last mile. I didn't run as well as I hoped on all 3 hard miles so I ran the last 1 mile pretty hard. I could feel the half marathon from yesterday in my legs, but tempo runs are always a good mental workout too and I felt like I ran strong throughout the run.

2/17/15-Tuesday

Workout: AM, drills and easy running. PM, 10min w/u, 4x300-500 w/ 200 jog, 20min c/d.

Mileage: 9.5 miles

In the morning we had inside stations because it was so cold outside. We got to run a bit outside though for our cool down which was nice. I came back for the afternoon practice thinking we were doing easy mileage, but coach wanted to hit the track again. To be honest it was pretty tough. I had hit the past two days pretty hard and my legs weren't having it. I ran under 2 mile race pace for the 300's and 500's but ended up only doing four sets instead of the usual five. I felt like I could have, I just thought it would be better not to dig too deep this early in the season. The hardest part of the workout was the 20min cool down. It was a rough day in the office.

One side note was that I took on the Fuddruckers's 4lb burger and 1lb fries challenge that night and had only eaten an apple and some toast that day in preparation. I'm not bragging at all, but I ended up being the only person in all of San Antonio to finish it all. It was pure hell, terrible, and the hardest thing I have ever done in my life… I had always wanted to do a food eating challenge, but this was not what I had expected. Running seems easy compared to competitive eating. If you want to see pictures of me doing the challenge, check out my Twitter.

2/18/15-Wednesday

Workout: Easy road mileage

Mileage: 7 miles

Ran after school on the roads. I got new Nike Pegasus 31's and my feet were a bit sore as I was breaking them in today. We ran at a pretty good clip averaging 6:40's for it all but tried to keep it controlled. All of the guys are looking forward to our meet on Friday at Northside. I'm doubling doing the 3200 and 1600 so we'll see how it all goes down. All of the meat from the burger challenge is still inside me and I can't tell if I'm hungry or stuffed. Moral of the story, never do a 5lb food challenge three days before a track meet.

2/19/15-Thursday

Workout: 10min w/u, 15min c/d. 500-600-500-600 with 2min rest @ 1600 race pace.

Mileage: 6.5 miles

Tough workout in the morning for me. The past few days my legs have just not been clicking at all. I have also been feeling a bit sick with a stomach bug so you add those two things and you get a nasty combination. I was able to hit my times just not as comfortably as I should feel at that pace. I ended up taking the afternoon off just because I wasn't feeling well. I got home and ended up taking a 2 hour nap.

2/20/15-Friday

Workout: First meet. 11min w/u, 2mile, 7min c/d. 7min w/u, 1600, 20min c/d.

Mileage: 9.5 miles

Well, today we had a “glorified workout" in our first meet. For the 3200, I wanted to go out there and run hard because I feel like my fitness is really good, but around lap 3 my legs just weren't clicking. I ran 9:49 winning it, but felt like I could have kept going for a couple of laps. The opening meet is always a tough one because you're still getting used to running that pace and feeling that pain. For the mile I went out hard again trying to hit 4:20's but died real hard again and ran 4:38 winning again. It was a fun meet though and a good learning experience. Nobody will care about these types of meets towards the end of the season so I'll take it as a good workout and move on. I mean it's easy to get disappointed on running so slow, but you just have to look at the big perspective. Last season I opened with a 4:41 so I guess I'm on the right track. I just want to make sure I'm enjoying racing again.

2/21/15-Saturday

Workout: 30min easy run

Mileage: 4.5 miles

I ran 3 miles by myself in the park and then stretched for about 10min to loosen up from last night. I then paced my two sisters for a 1600 time trial and they both ended up running PR's in 5:41. Halfway through the time trial Coach Rose Monday and Laura Roesler, yes the Bowerman winner, came to our track to do their workout. A cool side note is Coach Monday's son, Jack Monday, came to Champion High School his last two years so I have gotten to know their family pretty well. Now that Laura trains with Coach Monday we get to see them pretty regularly around the track or park during our runs. It's pretty chill.

2/22/15-Sunday

Workout: Off day

Mileage: 0 miles

I would usually do my long runs today, but since almost all of my meets are on Fridays, I'm switching my long runs to Saturdays. It will actually work out well because most of San Antonio's and Boerne's top guys do theirs on Saturdays too so we'll all probably start running together.

Week Mileage 58miles (I start my weeks on Sundays)

Week in Review:

Overall it was a rough week. I got a bit sick, did a killer food challenge, and ran either a crappy race or a solid workout however I chose to view my meet. My legs were really fatigued most of the week and can definitely be attributed to a long run Sunday, tempo Monday, intervals Tuesday, and a burger challenge. But I've also noticed throughout high school that when I run around 55-60 miles a week my legs just don't respond favorably, so I am going to take a down week next week and see how I feel.
