Boys 1600m
Not only does Merrell own a blazing-fast 800m PR, but he has the potential to win another event this weekend at state. He enters the 1600m with the second-fastest seed time of 4:30.49. But he will face stiff competition from cross country champion Austin Zirkel and runner-up Cash Kunkel, who enter with the third- and fourth-fastest seed times. Last year, they finished fourth (Zirkel) and fifth (Kunkel) at state in this event. We also can't forget about defending state champion and 1A state record holder Jesse Roberts, who has the fastest seed time (4:28.78). If this race comes down to a kick, I'd put money on Merrell and his 800m speed. But if they go out at a hard and fair pace, it's anyone's for the taking.
