Summer Traning Blog Week 1: Abby Riordan

Monday: Today was a 6-mile long run and the day we got to meet our new coach. I started the run out with Carson and Myles (a couple boys on my team) and did the first three miles with them, but since we ran an out and back course I had to turn around at three miles and they had more than me. The first three miles were 6:42, 7:07 and then 7:33. Once I turned around and ran about a half mile I spotted Anna Elkin and she ran with me for a couple miles for some company, we ran a little slow with a couple 8-minute miles. After that, I ran the last mile alone and ran back to Hebron with a 7:23. It was good because I felt pretty good the whole time. Once we all got back to Hebron we got to talk to the new coach a little bit about team goals and how we would accomplish our goals this season.

Tuesday: Tuesday is a race day where we race four miles as hard as we can. We ran a one-mile loop around our school and I raced all the boys on my team. I went out in a 5:37 which isn't too bad, but I would like to be going a bit faster. The next couple miles I died a little bit with a 6:30 and 6:43 and I also lost focus. The last mile I negative split with a 6:35 but still not as quick as I would like. Today my overall time was a 25:16 and my goal by the end of the summer is to be  running sub 24:00. We also took an ice bath today to recover from the hard run.

Wednesday: Today we did a 5-mile recovery run and a few of us on the team met up a 7 at Hebron to run together. We couldn't decide on a course to run on because they all get old and boring after running on them a lot so we decided to run to the nature preserve and back which ended up being a good five-mile loop. I ran with Anna Elkin because she had a similar workout to me. We didn't end up running the pace we wanted because the course we did was super hilly. For five miles my total time was 36.32 so about 7:20 pace. We went all the way down to Abor Hills then ran a mile or so there and came back up to Hebron and we found some sprinklers and of course ran through them to cool off for the last half mile. Today was super fun especially when you can run with your friends. This pic is post-run with Madi Turner and Anna Elkin.

Thursday: Thursday is another race day for us but we had 5 miles today. Also today I got a new watch so I got to use it for the first time today. I got the Garmin forerunner 220 and so far I love it. I raced the boys again today, and I went out in around a 5:30 but instead of splitting my watch I accidentally stopped it and only realized after another half mile so I don't have the exact splits for the first two miles. After three miles I felt better than I had in awhile and I was at 18:11 which isn't bad on the course we run on. I lost focus on the fourth mile and ran a 6:43 and finished with a 6:35. My overall time was a 31:30 which is about 6:20 pace. Today wasn't too bad the first three miles were good I just need to hold on longer each time.

Friday: Today was a four-mile recovery run and some of us met up at Hebron to run at a course in a nearby neighborhood. My running buddy Aaliyah Fazel came back from her vacation and we got to run together again after about a week. My legs were pretty dead today but it's okay because we get two recoveries in a row this week. We went about seven-minute pace the whole run, overall today wasn't too bad.

Saturday: All we had to do today was get in all our miles because normally we would have a timed mile but we are doing it Sunday for Run Across Texas camp. We met up at Hebron and all the girls and guys ran together at a slow 8:10 pace for 5 miles. We all met up at 7 but ended up starting running at 7:45 because we can never decide what course we want to run. We just ended up following the boys on a course they had made up a few days ago.

Sunday: Today we ran a timed mile with all the other schools that are coming to Run Across Texas. We all went to Bob Jones park and loaded all our stuff up for camp and raced a mile. I tried to take it out hard and I felt pretty good the whole mile, I ended up 2nd with 5:12. After the mile, we did a quick cool down and loaded up to head to the Monahans and we stopped in Abilene to get in a couple miles and have lunch and Ashton Endsley met us and will be joining us for the week. We have another couple miles tonight. I'm excited for this upcoming week because we get to race many great teams from around Texas and learn from some of the best coaches around.
