Moment No. 4: DeSoto State Champions
This year was unbelievable for the DeSoto track and field squad. They started off the season looking strong, but as we all know it's often hard to finish the season the way it started especially when you're in the biggest classification in the state. DeSoto knew that best from their 2015 campaign which was plagued by late season injuries on the guy's side. This year the team was on a path to take both crowns from the beginning. Even as early as late February the girl's team was running on all cylinders. They had a HUGE run dropping 45.12 for U.S. #12 All-Time in the 4x100m at their home invitational. After that race, Desoto wrote themselves in the record books as the 3rd fastest team from the last ten years and Cedar Hill as the 8th fastest. At that same meet, the DeSoto girls ran U.S. #12 All-Time we saw a battle emerge for the 4x400m relay on the guy's side. This battle was between Arlington Bowie and DeSoto for quarter-mile supremacy. Arlington Bowie ran 3:17.37 to take 1st while DeSoto ran 3:17.39 for 2nd.
This battle raged on all the way to the state meet where Arlington Bowie squeaked out the victory again running 3:14.03 to DeSoto's 3:14.22. In the end, it was the DeSoto guys who took the state title scoring 54 points. The majority of their points came in the relays, on both the guys and girls side. Both the guys and girls won their 4x100m relay match-ups while the girls also took the 4x200m relay as well. The guys took 4th in the 4x200m relay while the girls took 4th in the 4x400m both earning 8 points. The wins on both sides took a full team effort as several individuals scored points for the Eagles as well. On the girl's side Kira White, Alexis Duncan, and Rosaline Effiong, all scored individual points while Cj Gilmore scored points on the guys side. This year we see should see another great battle from both the DeSoto boys and girls squads.
