Region 4-3A
Goliad junior Ellie Albrecht is both the top returner from last year and the leader in the standing so far this year with her 11:17.44.
However, the team race will be what's fascinating here. Lago Vista looks to defend their 2017 win and they will enter as the favorites, but there will be a challenge. Both San Antonio Cole and Santa Gertrudis Academy have good squads and will look to take down Lago Vista.
On the boys side, I couldn't tell you when the last time the win didn't go to Luling. Oh, by the way, they've won a couple of state championships in recent years too. At the beginning of the season, there were questions on whether this would be the year they were vulnerable to have their streaks ended. It is still a possibility, but following all indicators, it looks like their regional streak will live on. San Antonio Cole is good as they usually are and will qualify for state without problems, but the win goes to Luling for one more year.
Individually, the defending state champ is back. Kevin Baez will look to end out his high school career with a second straight individual state title. Behind Baez are three other quality guys who will try to take him down. Edwin Zamudio, Landon Duplesis, and Walker Hendricks have all ran sub 16:00 for the 5K on the season.
