Region 1-4A Boys Should Be Crazy - Again!

Individual Virtual Results I Team Virtual Results

For the last five years, Region 1-4A has produced the 4A boys cross country state champion. San Elizario held that distinction for four years and then last year, Decatur was able to continue the streak.

Last year was more than just one team winning the state meet. Things started the week before at the regional meet with a wild and crazy race that was.

Andrews became the first team in four years to knock off San Elizario to get the regional win by scoring 63 total points. The Canyon boys had a great race as they finished second overall in the team standing  with 78 points followed by San Ellie in third with 87. Decatur followed up with 117 points to grab the fourth and final state meet qualifying position.

The race was so whacky, that it was intensely close throughout the entire race. At the finish line, through the first three runners, the top three teams were only separated by single digits and were still close through the fourth funner. As in classic cross country form, the fifth runner was the deciding factor for the margin of victory.

Eventually, at the state meet, it was the region's fourth place team - Decatur, who would go on to win the state championship. However, the other two trophy winners were also from the region. Andrews ended up placing second only two points behind Decatur with San Ellie grabbing the last award winning place in third. Canyon placed fifth overall as they showed how wild and crazy the four teams would make the last two weeks of the season.

The top individuals in the region were also big time players at state. Edwin Gomez, the region champ and runner-up Samuel Ashley would finish second and third at state.

This year, the meet could be just as impactful and even closer that last year, Gomez and Ashley look to have a major impact in both the individual and team outcome. However, other runners in the region could also have big days individually and even bigger impacts on their teams.

But all eyes will once again be on the outcome of the team race. The same teams all look to do battle and get back to the state meet and have another opportunity to get a championship.

Based on this season's bests, Andrews looks to have a good shot at winning another district championship, but it's by even less points than last year. Decatur wants to defend their state championship -- And San Elizario wants to win again -- Oh and Canyon has made it clear they want to push for a state title as well.

The regional title could come down to whoever has the best fifth runner that day. Lookin at the virtual meet for the region, all teams could be within reach of a win again through four runners.

San Elizario would lead the meet through the first four runners with 38 points and Andrews (45) and Decatur (48) would be close behind. As the score table above shows, with the addition of the anticipated fifth runners based on season best times, Andrews would win the region with 67 point and Decatur (71 points) and San Elizario (78) would finish third.

This is the time we have all been waiting on and one of the races we've been anticipating all season long and it is just days away.
