Texas Boys Distance Runners Of All-Time

Boys All-Time Distance Runners 11 - 20

20. Duncan Phillips - 2004 - 2007 - (College Station A&M Consolidated) - Phillips was another all around type of runner. He could run with the best in the 800m and do the same all of the way up to the 5K. His  1:50.65, 4:10.96, 9:21.47, and 14:59 PRs are evident of that. He captured state titles in 2006 in the 1600m and in cross country including a 30th place finish at Foot Locker Nationals.

19. Austen Dalquist - 2011 - -2014 - (Keller) - Dalquist was in a tough district and it was hard for him to break out, but when he did -- oh boy did he ever. He had fast times throughout his career, but it wasn't until his senior year when the accomplishments began to come around. He finally made it to state as a senior when he finished third. Then, on the track, he won the Elite 5K at TDF and then state in the 1600m and the 3200m. His state titles and his PRs have him on this list: 4:07.53 (4:05.33 one mile), 8:57.75, 15:25.90.

17. Carter Cheeseman - 2016 - 2019 - (Fort Worth Christian) - Cheeseman started his high school career off in Tennessee, but moved here after his sophomore year when he immediately made his presence felt. He quickly became a TAPPS super star winning seven state titles; he quickly outgrew that status when he won NXR south and was fourth at Foot Locker South qualifying for both National meets. He finished 6th  at Foot Locker and 36th at NXN. A year later, he doubled again finishing 10th at Foot Locker and 27th at NXN. Cheeseman also had a lot of success on the track placing high in several other national meets and racking up impressive PRs. He also qualified for Team USA for the IAFF World Cross Country Championships. In the end, he would make himself a true Texan by performing big throughout his career with 1:57.81, 4:10.14 (4:07.12 - one mile), 8:53.45 - 2 mile, and 14:42.44 PRs.

16. Trevor Gilley - 2010 - 2013 - (Southlake Carroll) - Gilley, is yet another Southlake Carroll representative on this list. His spot was mainly earned with his running on the track. Gilley had PRs of 1:52.99, 4:07.87, 8:56.07, and 15:11.30 in cross country. While he never won an individual state title he did help his team win several team championships and he medaled individually in several events at state. Gilley was a stud and his performances reflect that.

18. Robert Domanic - 2010 -2013 - (Hebron) - Domanic was a manic in his high school career. He came in impressively and was consistent throughout. Senior year, he won the UIL 5A state cross country title and the 1600m and 3200m titles. He was fourth at state as a junior in a very strong year behind several guys on this list and just missed qualifying for NXN with his 7th place NXR South Finish. However, he qualified for Foot Locker Nationals where he was 20th overall. As a senior, he didn't miss a thing placing fifth at NXN and 15th at Foot Locker Nationals. Domanic's high school PRs were outstanding going for 1:54.07, 4:07.49, 8:57.95, and 15:06 in cross country.

15. Steve Magness - 2000 - 2003 - (Klein Oak) - Magness was one of those rare athletes who could do it all and do it all very well. He is another athlete with crazy range and outstanding speed. With PRs of 1:52.70, 4:01.58 (4:01.02 - one mile), 9:06.76, and 15:09.71 in cross country, they show what kind of athlete he was. Magness won the 2003 UIL 5A 1600m title in 4:03.27. He was so special, he ran against college and professional athletes in the mile during his senior year. The only thing keeping Magness out of the Top 10 is a faster 3200m time and more state titles.

14. Reed Connor - 2004 - 2007 - (The Woodlands) - Connor was one of the most reliable runners in Texas history. Dating back to his freshman year, he was a state and national level runner. He medaled in the 3200m each year at the state track meet and represented his team at NXN. His PRs of 1:57.08, 4:10.69, 8:55.25, and 14:47.20 show how strong he was. His senior year was epic when he won state in cross country, NXR South, and then NXN. He ran one of the fastest times ever on the old state meet course when he went 14:47.20. Also in his senior year, he ran three sub 9:00 3200s. Probably the only thing keeping him out of the Top 10 is a faster 1600m time and more individual state titles.

13. Craig Nowak - 2009 - 2012 - (Cypress Woods) - Nowak was an absolute stud! He was a four time state champion and was a big name on the national scene. As a senior, he won Foot Locker South and then was 14th at the National meet and was then third at NXN. On the track, he ran the fastest ever 3200m on record by a Texan with a 8:49.12 at Arcadia then went 8:59 to win state. At state, he dropped a 55 last lap out of nowhere to go 4:06 and win the 1600m. Nowak's PRs were 1:58.59, 4:06.65, 8:49.12, and 15:05.20 in cross country.

12. John Holmes - 1983 - 1986 - (South Houston) - Many may not have heard of Holmes, but he was a straight up monster in running. His only issue was coming up in the 80s against so many outstanding runners and teams. Holmes had many battles with the great Ruben Reina and several others like Erik Henry. However, he was able to put together an outstanding resume including a 1986 800m state title when he went 1:51.5. He was perhaps one of the first in a long line of rangy runners. He also had PRs of 4:06.30 and 8:56.66.

11. Leo Manzano - 2001 - 2004 - (Marble Falls) - Manzano is one of the best athletes with elite range in state history. We are all aware of Manzano's college and professional olympic careers that led to NCAA All-American and Olympic medaling. However, things all started at Marble Falls where he went 1:50.48, 4:06.29, 9:07.18, and 15:20 in cross country. Manzano won six UIL 4A state titles in track and two in cross country. The only thing keeping Manzano from a Top 10 or even the top spot is a faster 3200m, faster 5K time, and big national meet finishes.
