Chance Gibson, a former distance runner from The Woodlands and a freshman at Texas A&M, was involved in an auto accident on December 18, 2021, and died. The student-athlete was traveling home for the holidays when the accident occurred.
Gibson was an important member of The Woodlands' runner-up and third-place cross country teams in 2019 and 2020, respectively. He was the third-place individual finisher at the UIL Region 2-6A Championships in 2020.
On the track in 2021, Gibson was the UIL 6A-District 13 runner-up in the 3,200m at 9:33.11 and placed fourth in the 1,600m at 4:24.27. He followed that up at the Region 2-6A Track and Field Championships with a fourth-place finish in the 1,600m (4:17.98) and fifth in the 3,200m (9:30.37).
Overall, he posted the following high school personal best times: 800m - 1:56, 1600m - 4:16, 3200m - 9:18, 5000m (xc) - 15:11 that helped earn him a position within the Texas A&M program.
This past fall, Gibson ran in the Aggie Opener 5k, placed 26th at 16:38.5 and competed in the Texas A&M Invitational finishing the 8k course with a time of 25:41.6.
Chance Gibson is survived by his parents Jana and Spencer Gibson and three siblings. He was an A&M legacy student as his father and three uncles are all former students at Texas A&M.
