2021 Gold Medalist Taytum Goodman from Earth Springlake was in lane 5, hoping to repeat the magic from a year ago.
Taytum had the fastest qualifying time coming in today from regionals with a time of 5:25.05. She also had the 1A conference record from a year ago with a time of 5:06.78.
Taytum took out fast and was cruising hoping to add more gold to her collection. Down the backstretch coming into her first split, Goodman had a 1:11 split and a dominant lead. Lilly Benson a Freshman from Roby was running 2nd and Kaylee Bezio a Junior from Graford was in 3rd.
Goodman continued to press the pace and extend her lead with places 2-5 running pretty evenly. Through two laps Goodman continued to set the pace with Bezio moving to second and Mariana Sanchez the Senior from Imperial Buena Vista moved into third.
No one was catching Goodman as she put her foot on the gas and just kept it going with one lap to go. Sanchez moved into second place with Daylee Chisum a Sophomore from Jayton moved up to claim the third spot.
Goodman crossed the line first and followed up last year's gold with another one this year with a time of 5:20.31, Sydney Partin a Junior from Priddy received the silver with a time of 5:34.04, and Sanchez captured the bronze medal with a time 5:36.41.
