Marquis Johnson, Jonathan Simms, Jelani Watkins Win Titles

6A Boys 100m

Marquis Johnson (Dickinson) and Ashton Torns (Austin Westlake) are making it a habit to head-to-head at the 2023 6A State Meet. In the long jump it was Torns who won by less than three inches as both flew past the 25-foot mark. Johnson was able to even the score in the 100m.

At the gun, Johnson broke from the blocks with the best start of anyone in the race. He was able to hold his top-end speed and flew across the finish line in 10.45 into a slight headwind. Torns found himself in the back of the pack at the start of the race, but he was able to push through to a silver medal performance in 10.52. Duncanville's Caden Durham was edged out for the silver by Torns and had to settle for the bronze after finishing in 10.53.

6A Boys 400m

Sophomore Jonathan Simms (Allen) controlled the 6A Boys 400m final from start to finish. He went out quickly and held a sizeable lead throughout the race and he crossed the finish line in 46.48.

Lawson Jacobs of Klein Forest gave chase to Simms but was unable to catch him and had to settle for the silver medal in 47.24.

The excitement in the race came in the battle for the bronze medal. Javaris Bonner of Fort Bend Travis sat in seventh place coming down the home stretch but was able to finish with a strong burst over the final 50 meters to take third place in 47.33.

6A Boys 200m

Klein Forest junior Jelani Watkins made it two 6A Boys 200m titles in a row with his dominant performance. He was the first out of the blocks and was challenged by Dickinson's Marquis Johnson but Watkins was able to accelerate past him in the final 75 meters. Watkins posted a time of 20.54 which was faster than his winning time from 2022.

Johnson continued his outstanding State meet performance with his second silver medal of the day. He crossed the tape in 20.86 just .02 ahead of Langham Creek's Jaquaize Pettaway. Earlier in the meet, Johnson won the 100m and was second in the long jump.
