The Texas indoor track and field season is one where mostly sprint and field events dominate the Texas rankings.

However, this season, the distance events are seeing some of the top Texas runners get after it pretty early into the year.

We are accustomed to seeing some athletes just begin to get their legs back under them after taking a break for rest/recovery. Others have been looking to get a read on their level of fitness with their continuous streak or "CDRs" still in tact from the cross country season.

Where both sides currently stand is with some outstanding indoor performances thus far this season.

The boys distance events have top times of 4:09 in the mile and 8:55 in the two mile, both by Adam Burlison. The senior has initiated his season near the range of the end of the previous season.

In the 3,000m, we have also seen two of the top all-time 3,000m performances from Ethan Gonzalez and Benjamin Montgomery.

I don't want to overlook a freshman boys mark in the mile that is pretty impressive. Da'Juan Allison (Humble Summer Creek) has a 4:25.15 performance already on his profile. The Summer Creek frosh led the Carl Lewis Invitational mile and was responsible for the pacing duties for three-quarters of the race.

Texas girls have also been impressive throughout the month of January. In the mile, we have four 5:00 performances or better. Just this past weekend, Samantha Humphries ran a state leading mark of 4:50.89 in Chicago. That leads her sister Nicole Humphries who has a 4:55.12 on the year along with Sophia Bendet (5:00.37) and Emma Wade (5:00.67).

Continuing to dazzle with supremely fast runs is Elizabeth Leachman. She isn't just more than likely the best high school distance runner in the country, but she proved this weekend, her level of running surpasses that.

Leachman ran at the Texas Tech Corky Classic where she ran 9:16.84 against collegiate competition. She ran to the win and the TX No. 3 all-time best performance.
