Girl Power
Girls Sprints
Houston is loaded with tons of talent on the girls side. We were able to catch up with two returning sprinters from the state meet. Takyera Roberson of Houston Wheatley returns as the #1 girls 400 runner from the entire state last year. She finished as the fastest Texan of the year with her 53.90 performance at the USA World Youth Trials. Roberson was a workhorse at the won the 5A girls State meet winning the 400m and placing 3rd in the 100m and 4th in the 200m. With PRs of 11.60 and 23.61, Roberson shows she is a classic throwback to the past of sprinters ranging from the 100-400. Roberson plans on working on her sprint speed and it is evident with her 7.77 in the 60m and 25.17 in the 200m at the Texas A&M Indoor High School Classic. "I'm going to be running more 100s and 200s to enhance my 400, and my get out."
Another talented sprinter/jumper is Cy-Spring's Samiyah Samuels. Samuels is one of the Texas' top sprinters and leads the charge for the Cy-Springs in their quest for a team title. Samuels, the World Pan American LJ Champion is off to a hot start already posting marks of 20-0.25 US #2and 7.56 US #8 this indoor season. Samuels spoke with TXMileSplit about how this summers international experience has developed her athletic mentality. "I'm training harder and almost every day." "I prepare more mentally, meditation preparation for my races and my jumps."
