Meet Preview: Region 2 Cross Country Championships

Caleb Legenfeld competes at 2020 UIL XC state meet

Class 2A

The Region 2-2A girls race could belong to the youngsters. Last years top two finishers Allison Hedrick and McKayla Donnell have graduated and now the top times entering regionals belongs to freshmen and sophomores.

Muenster freshman Emma Walterscheid (11:57) and sophomore Macy Bayer (12:18) have the first and third fastest times and Goldthwaite sophomore Rani House checks in as the second fastest with her 12:14 run.

The Haskell girls should be the favorites to win the region. They have four of the best girls coming in and they can run within 20 seconds of one another. They should be too tough to overcome.

The rest should be interesting. Goldthwaite has a 13:10 team average, Muenster has a 13:11 team average, De Leon has a 13:16 team average, and Alvord has a 13:18 team average. That makes four teams running for three open qualifying positions assuming Haskell secures the first.

We've covered how good the Region 2-2A boys race could be and how important this race will be to the state level.

Individually, Connor Bartek (Goldthwaite) should be the heavy favorite based on his 15:33 and Lonnie Cooper (Tioga) should be right in the mix based on his 16:02 time. Caleb Lengefeld (Hamilton) was the regional runner-up last year and went on to finish ninth last year at the state meet.

Team wise, Poolville was last year's state meet runner-up and has the best 5k average and split this year.

Hamilton has clearly made it known that their goal this year is to shoot for a state title. They usually compete after football on Fridays, but that is not going to be the case on Monday.

Quanah is just as strong as anyone in 2A this year and they'll also have a shot at the state title

Alvord, Itasca, Hawley, and Tioga have also had very good seasons so far. That makes the race for four qualifying positions a must see event in the Region 2-2A boys race.
