Everything you should know before the state meet

The state meet is right around the corner, and we now have an idea of how the races might play out. This year will have a bigger field than previous ones because each division is now taking sixteen teams as opposed to twelve, as well as the top ten individuals in each region that aren’t on qualifying teams.

A short review of the regional meets: Region I was the only three mile course, and despite being initially mistaken for a 5k the times were still rolling. Madeleine Reed led a deep field and won with a time of 16:51. We hadn’t seen much of Safiya Belbina this season but she came through in second with a 16:59, followed by Ashton Endsley with a 17:03. We saw Endsley run a 16:58 5k at district, so Regionals wasn’t her best performance.

Madie Boreman won Region 2 with a 17:45 5k, closely followed by Abby Guidry with a 17:47. Region 3 was dominated by sophomore Julia Heymach who finished in a time of 17:11. Region 4 was a tight battle between Devin Clark and Paige Hofstad, ranked 1-2 in the state, but Clark continues her undefeated season with a time of 17:17, Hofstad in second with 17:19. Abby Gray led the 5A race with no one around her, winning easily with a time of 17:37. She is looking good with a 40 second lead on everyone else in the 5A division for the state title. Below is my interview with her after regionals.
