Summer Traning Blog Week 3: Abby Riordan

Monday: Today all Hebron runners met up at Stewarts Creek Park in The Colony, which is a 3.5-mile trail that goes around Lewisville lake to do our long run of 7. We all came back from camp super motivated and excited to share our experiences with the younger runners. We spent our seven mile run talking about our goals and planning to go to higher mileage this year and work harder than we had in the past. We decided that we needed to step it up and work hard if we wanted to achieve the things we had been talking about for the season. This run was good because it gave us time to talk about our plans for the season and how our team was going to stay motivated to do the things we talked about doing at camp.

Tuesday: Normally today we would have a race, but coming back from camp we had a week of recovery runs to let ourselves recover from the previous week. I did my four miles at about 6:55 pace. Today a few of us on the team wore some of the clothes we traded with other teams at camp as you can see in this picture (ABOVE).

Wednesday: Another recovery run today but we had 6 today so we decided to do a course because we were getting bored of the mile loop we have been doing at Hebron. Doing a course was not the best idea though because I didn't end up hitting the pace I wanted to. Today made us excited for 6:30 practice next week because we were tired of running in the heat. My total time was 45:47 for the day, which I was not too happy about. After we ran we did a core workout and took an ice bath.

Thursday: Today was the same run as yesterday but instead of running a course we decided to go back to the one mile loop around Hebron. Before we began running, we did our normal logbook with our coaches and then did about 15 minutes of form stretches and exercises so we ended up running at about 7:30 and by then it was super hot. My first mile was 6:38 as I felt pretty good, then I went 6:28, 6:54, 6:59, 7:01, and lastly 6:48.

Friday: I ran with Aaliya from my team today for our five-mile recovery run. I was happy that this was the last recovery run of the week because I had been getting bored not racing. Our total time today was 35:20 which was 7:04 pace which I felt pretty good about that pace. Afterward, we played a game with our new coach so he can learn our names and get to know us better. We ended up playing a game called bounce ball on the tennis courts and it was fun team bonding.

Saturday: Finally, today we got to race again because we had a timed mile. I was looking forward to this all week after not being able to race from all the recovery runs. I decided to run with the boys today so I could have a better chance of running faster. I went out in a 1:09 for the first lap, which was nice because it was what I had been trying to do the past few weeks. The second lap was a 1:18, then for the third lap I just tried to hold on with a 1:22. My last lap was a 1:19 which meant I ran a 5:09. I was happy with today because I ran 4 seconds off my PR.  I know  a couple of boys PR'ed which was Myles, Ross, and Harrison and most of the girls (such as Hannah and Aaliya) were close to their P.R.'s which made us all super excited to see our training pay off. After the mile, we got in a couple of sprints and cooled down, giving us a total of 5 miles for the day.

Sunday: Normally we would have another recovery run today but since we have a practice race next Friday, we had to switch our week around and we had another long run today. Hannah, Madi and I decided to move up mileage this week so we had our first ever 9-mile run today which was the longest (non-stop) we had ever been. Since we had so many, we went to a trail at Grapevine Lake to run and when we got there we saw one of our Southlake friends and she introduced us to the running club there. I think this was the best place to do a long run because everywhere you turn people were motivating and friendly. We ended up going pretty slow but it was okay for our first 9 miles ever. When we finished, we went to IHop for some post-run breakfast.
