2024 Region 1-1A Boys

Region 1-1A Boys

It was Adrian Rosales (Booker) taking the bull by the horse and storming around Mae Simmons Park to the tune of a 16:55 and 28-second win.

Eduardo Cedillo (O'Donnell) was second in 17:23 and Carlos Plata (Sands) was only three seconds back in third place.

Booker dominated the team race winning by 59 points and a swift 18:23 team average; Rosales' low-stick winning finish was impactful. Boys Ranch was second and getting fifth and sixth place finishes from Micah Holman and Carteer Estaban was huge. Texline and O'Donnell wiped the sweat away from their brows after an extremely close finish to get the third and fourth place final spots to go to state.

Only eight points separated the second place team and the sixth place team. Petersburg missed the final position by one point, Petersburg missed by two points, and Happy was out by three points.

A coach can't preach too many times how important every person in a uniform is and you can't expect another teammate to make the difference, everybody has to make a difference. Sometimes, that happens and it still isn't the case.

That is why they call it the "Region of Doom"!

2024 Region 1-2A Girls

Region 1-2A Girls

It wasn't a surprise to see Farwell teammates Isabella Jaime and Alexis Wade go 1-2 at this race. Jaime finished with a 12:07 win with Wade coming through in 12:18.

Farwell got a run for their money in the team race from Gruver who didn't run as fast overall, but their ability to get their top four ahead of Farwell's four and they won the battle of the five runners. It was only a three point separation that had Gruver coming out on top 76<79.

Sundown got a good 3, 4, 5 runs and Christoval was stronger up front to secure the fourth finishing position.

1. Gruver - 76 points - 0.55 Spread  I  13:10 Avg

2. Farwell - 79 points - 1:34 Spread  I  12:58 Avg

2024 Region 1-2A Boys

Region 1-2A Boys

We knew one of the Plains boys would win the race, we just weren't exactly sure which one it would be. Sawyer Hamilton showed us it wasn't wise to doubt him as he won his third consecutive Region 1-2A individual title.

Jeremiah Gonzales and Christian Sanchez made it a Plains 1, 2, 3 sweep as Gonzalez finished three seconds behind Hamilton in second and Sanchez was another six seconds back at 17:01.

The team title also went back to defending state champions Plains. However, it was an all-out battle for second place.

Eldorado, Sonora, and Sunray wera only separated by three points and their team averages were even closer. Eldorado and Sonora tied for second with Eldorado's tight pack running was their key and their fifth runner crossed ahead of Sonora's.

1. Plains - 37 points - 1:06 Spread  I  17:20 Avg

2. Eldorado - 133 points - 0.37 Spread  I 18:28 Avg

2024 Region 1-3A Girls

Region 1-3A Girls

Kenli Atwood (Holliday) won her second regional title with her 11:36 run. We figured she would take the win and Konnar McClendon (Canadian) looked like a shoe in for second and that is the place she got with a time of 11:52.

Kate Hesse (Brownfield) edged out Holliday runners Avy Mauldin and Sarah Spears for third place.

1. Holliday - 31 points - 1:10 Spread  I  12:19 Avg

2. Dalhart - 96 points - 0:55 Spread  I  13:03 Avg

3. Wall - 169 points - 1:40 Spread  I  13:25 Avg

4. Canadian - 179 points - 2:28 Spread  I  13:25 Avg

2024 Region 1-3A Boys

Region 1-3A Boys

It was no shocker that Noah Strohman (Holliday) win his third regional title. He ran 15:17 for the win, which was nearly 45-seconds ahead of the next finisher.

That was Kenny Pritchard (Tuscola Jim Ned) who had been running well all season long coming through in 16:02. Hatfield Cason (Alpine) impressively went 16:09 for third place.

Holliday got nice runs from their 2, 3, and 4 to make the win for them a forgone conclusion.

Everything else had to be earned and prayed for. Eastland was second, four points ahead of Jim Ned, only nine points back was Lubbock Roosevelt in fourth.

It didn't stop there as Bowie was in the dreaded fifth place spot just six points back and Breckenridge was two points behind them.

1. Holliday - 70 points - 2:40 Spread  I  16:50 Avg

2. Eastland - 146 points - 2:26 Spread  I  17:42 Avg

2024 Region 1-4A Girls

Region 1-4A Girls

This was one of the best races of the weekend in Lubbock as seven girls ran under 12-minutes. Individually, the race was in the same order as last year's state meet.

The defending region and state champ Addyson Bristow (Canyon) kept enough space (3-seconds) between her and runner-up Nayomi Granados (Randall). Brooke French (Randall) was third, edging out Emily Gross (Dumas) by one second.

This season has series of tough been battles amongst district rivals Canyon, Randall, and Dumas.

It was close at district between Canyon and Randall and it was even closer at the region race. Canyon won by three points and the two teams had the exact same 11:59 team average. The race could get even tighter in Round Rock.

Dumas was third again behind their fellow district mates and Brownwood was fourth.

1. Canyon - 40 points - 1:26 Spread  I  11:59 Avg

2. Canyon Randall - 43 points - 1:33 Spread  I  11:59 Avg

3. Dumas - 107 points - 1:39 Spread  I  12:39 Avg

4. Brownwood - 130 points - 1:06 Spread  I  12:56 Avg

2024 UIL Region 1-4A Boys

Region 1-4A Boys

This race went exactly how it was predicted to go. It was a Canyon party. Only Antonio Arreola (San Elizario) and his fourth place finish was able to keep it from being a 1-7 finish from the Canyon boys. That was one of the most impressive things we've seen all weekend. Only the Hamilton girls upstaged that with their 1-5 and perfect scoring finish in the Region 2-2A girls race.

Lathan Lewter won the race with a 15:22, Ryan Fernandez was second in 15:48, and Noah Cooper was third in 16:04.

If we wanted to nit pick Canyon, we can charge them for not running under 16-minutes and not going under 60-seconds for their spread, which we've seen them do several times this season. They went 16:00 on the dot and 1:02.

Dumas ran very well, they went 16:57 with a 20-second gap, Big Spring wasn't too far off with a 17:01 average and a 41-second gap and West Plains had a 17:20 average and a 52-second gap.

2024 Region 1-5A Girls

Region 1-5A Girls

Birdville freshman Sofia Phillips is having a really good season and it just got even better after her regional championship. Her 18:18 run was just enough to keep Molly Garrison (Aledo) from grabbing the title herself.

Garrison was runner-up with Ella Magallan (Burleson Centennial).

Aledo won another team title going and was the only team with an average under 20-minutes.

1. Aledo - 51 points - 1:56 Spread  I  19:25 Avg

2. Colleyville Heritage - 85 points - 1:32 Spread  I  20:02 Avg

3. Abilene - 101 points - 2:28 Spread  I  20:02 Avg

2024 UIL Region 1-5A Boys

Region 1-5A Boys

Although Diego Romero (El Paso Americas) is new to the 5A classification, he isn't new to the region. He advanced individually last year in 6A and took things to another level adding the region title with his 15:47.

Miles Westbrook (El Paso) was runner-up going 15:51 narrowly beating Abdirisak Saidgurhan (Amarillo Palo Duro) who looks to be finding his rhythm with his second sub 16:00 run of the year. John Alcantar (Abilene) was the only runner under 16-minutes in this race.

Grapevine was able to get back to their region winning ways by taking the team win with only a 39-second gap.

Colleyville Heritage also dropped a gem of 39-second spread.

Aledo is making a trip back to state after their third place finish and El Paso Burges took fourth.

2024 Region 1-6A girls

Region 1-6A Girls

Heading into the meet, our preview uncovered how many girls who entered with sub 18:00 runs. However, this was an equalizer course. It isn't short, fast, nor is it conducive for fast times. The windy day was also assuredly going to make sure there weren't going to be many fast times.

Macy Wingard (Denton Braswell) was one of the five girls who did dip under 18:00. She also defended her regional title on her way to the state meet with a 17:18 win. If she is able to win there, that will cap off and undefeated season.

Maya Easterwood (Coppell) gave Wingard another close race as she finished seven-seconds back in second with a 17:25.

The Flower Mound trio of Adeline Bennett - 17:44, Alexandra Fox - 17:46, and Ava Cole - 17:49 looked like they were cruising for much of the race.

The Jaguars turned in a modest 18:17 performance, but put their five scorers ahead of everyone's third runner.

Northwest Nelson missed out on a trophy last year by one point. It is going to be hard to keep them off of the podium this year. They ran a 19:15 average, but their 54-second gap will keep them in any race.

Carroll and Prosper ran races that mirrored one another. Only three points separated they, but they had a good beat on fifth place El Paso Franklin.

1. Flower Mound - 34 points - 1:31 Spread  I  18:17 Avg

2. Northwest Nelson - 97 points - 0.54 Spread  I  19:15 Avg

3. Carroll - 124 points - 1:14 Spread  I  19:27 Avg

4. Prosper - 127 points - 1:26 Spread  I  19:29 Avg

2024 Region 1-6A Boys

Region 1-6A Boys

If you haven't raced in Lubbock or at the Mae Simmons Park course, you can't effectively appreciate how adverse it is compared to the other regions.

While all of the regions come with their own set of challenges, especially on certain years, the Lubbock region is consistent with challenges.

While it is not the hardest course in the world, it is the most difficult regional course.

That is why of all the sub 15-minute runners on the season who were in this race, only one went under that mark on Monday or Tuesday.

That was Caden Leonard (Carroll) who's winning time was 14:53.

Joaquin De La Cruz (McKinney Boyd) was second in 15:07 and Ruel Newberry (Denton Guyer) was third in 15:12.

Carroll won yet another regional team championship and they're going for their sixth straight state title.

This was not the typical Carroll race. Their average wasn't fast, but that doesn't concern me. What is a little surprising was their gap time. They had a 1:15 spread and their four and five positions didn't look like their typical productions.

Eastwood ran a 16:03 average and they were over a minute for their gap time as well.

I don't expect either one of them to have a repeat in Round Rock.

Northwest Nelson didn't have a good average either, but their sub 60-second gap was positie.

The team that may have surprised some (not me) was Flower Mound. I didn't think there is one region with four teams better than them and I guess that includes the powerful Region 1. They ran a 16:19 average, which isn't world beating, but they ran tight with their 0.25 spread. None of the other usually tight teams were able to do so on this day and that will be great Flower Mound moving forward.

1. Carroll - 46 points - 1:15 Spread  I  15:39 Avg

2. El Paso Eastwood - 94 points - 1:08 Spread  I  16:03 Avg

3. Northwest Nelson - 120 points - 0.58 Spread  I  16:14 Avg

4. Flower Mound - 121 points - 0.25 Spread  I  16:19
