Region 1-5A

Girls

Allie Love (Colleyville Heritage) was runner-up at last year's state meet. She enters regionals ready to compete after her second place finish at the district meet behind Birdville junior Quinn Dixon. She is a legit star and expect to see her press the pace in Lubbock. Her 17:39 at the Chile Pepper Festival is a good sign that she is ready for the championship season.

The sophomore class will be well represented with a gang of front runners in the race. Reese Pena (Lubbock) and Zanashia Harris (Lubbock Coronado) both qualified for state as freshmen last year and are two of the top performers in the region.

Top teams heading into the regional meet are....of course, several state ranked teams. CCCAT No. 4 Colleyville Heritage finished fourth at the state meet last year and look like they're headed back to Round Rock if they can put in another solid performance. No. 6 Grapevine was seventh last year and they have four returners from last year's state meet team led by senior Kylie Himes. No. 9 Abilene didn't qualify for state last year, but they are in the top-10 and they haven't looked this good since the Ashton Endsley days from a couple of years ago.

If you're looking for a team or two to break into the top four, we have a couple. The Amarillo Sandies is a team you can pencil in to be pressing for a qualifying position. They were at state last year and going into regionals they have the fifth best team average in the region with a time of 19:58.

Aledo checks in with a 19:56 team average and could break into the conversation. Midlothian should also be in the conversation with their 20:03 team average. Everything will come down to the four and five runners; that's what makes cross country so special.

Boys

If you're looking for an entertaining race, the Region 1-5A boys race will be the state meet prequel. This event is highly anticipated and you won't want to miss it. Adam Burlison (Grapevine), Wyatt Athey (Denton), David Mora (Lubbock Monterey), and more all turned in impressive district races.

Burlison returns to Lubbock and Mae Simmons for what will be a completely different race than what he's had in his old hometown and home course. Mora is another runner familiar with Mae Simmons. The Lubbock Monterey senior has been on a mission all season long. Athey is a senior who has been knocking on the individual state title door for three years and has one more shot at clinching the gold. All three boys have run under 15 minutes this season, but those races were without consequence. Everything rides on the next two runs.

Other key runners to watch out for are Noah Watt (Amarillo), Chase Gunn (Fort Worth Arlington Heights), Xavier Sanchez (Lubbock Monterey), Emilio Salas (Amarillo Tascosa), Tyler Westrom (Argyle), Andruw Villa (Abilene), and Brian Woolums (Argyle). They have all run under 15:40 this season.

Grapevine is the defending back-to-back state champion. With Burlison and Alberto Rayon ready to run and defend their legacy, they could be looking at another run at a state title. They come in ranked No. 2 in the CCCAT rankings. No. 4 ranked Amarillo and No. 7 ranked Argyle are also ranked teams with team averages under 16:15.

Denton has been on the podium for the past two years at the state meet and their team average of 16:16 has them in a good position to get back to state. Lubbock Monterey, Burleson Centennial, and Aledo are all in solid positions to press for a qualifying position.
