Meet Preview: Region 3 Cross Country Championships

A Eustace runner competes at the 2020 UIL 3A XC state meet

Class 3A

The Region 3-3A girls race was loaded last year. The eventual state champion Yierra Flemmings (Cameron Yoe), Addison Sykora (Lorena) fifth, Makayla Pavelka (West) sixth all return to try to improve on last year's excellent running.

Coming into the meet, Sykora has the best time with her 11:45, Esmeralda Garcia (Brazos) is second with her 11:52, and Pavelka has the third best time in 12:02.

Cameron Yoe junior Logan Pevehouse also has a 12:02 and there are four other girls who have times under 12:14 that will help make a heck of a race.

Sykora's Lorena girls are planning to have a heck of a day of their own. They were second last year at regionals and fourth at state, but this year they are faster and are a much tighter group. They can have a 12:21 team average based on PRs and race with in 56 seconds of one another. Last year, they were 13:32 and 1:08 at regionals and at state 12:57 with a 1:39 split.

McGregor was the regional champs last year. This year they they have a 12:49 average adn 15 second split, which will make for an a great race between them and Lorena.

Rogers and East Bernard should be contenders as well. They are both fast and have outstanding team splits.

The Region 3-3A race should be a good one. Nathan Evans (Cameron Yoe) has the top time going into regionals with his 16:07.He has a good race experience from this year's McNeil  Inv. where he won his division.

Add Trenton Porte and Ryan Porte both of Eustace, and Kade Sebek (Rogers) and Raul Arceo (McGregor) and the boys race will be a hot one to watch.

Eustace is a UIL 3A powerhouse program and with the Porte brothers they could be tasting state championships again. After the Portes, the 17 second 3-5 split could be the recipe for the regional championship.

McGregor has a solid chance for another regional title. They have a 34 second split from their 1-5 runners and with their 17:03 team average they have a shot at the top team spot.

Cameron Yoe, Rogers, Rockdale, and Riesel all have quality shots at qualifying for state as teams.
