UIL State Meet Preview

UIL 4A Boys

Chances To Win Individual Title

Listen, the 4A boys race will be very good. It has been outstanding over the last several years, but it could be really big this year.

Lathan Lewter (Canyon) is my pick to win the individual race. I think he is just too fit and good to pair with his good bill of health compared to those who can really challenge him.

Ryan Fernandez (Canyon) is Lewter's teammate and was runner-up to at the Region 1-4A race.

Another set of teammates who can fly is actually a trio. The La Feria boys will have a puncher's chance as they always do, but the question is if they have enough fitness and bill of health to challenge for the win like they have the previous two years.

Anthony Morales, Armando Morales, and Nathan Salinas were some hungry young bucks as freshmen and sophomores. They are still some of the best in Texas, and their 15:00, 15:10, and 15:25 performances respectively (all before the second weekend of September) prove it.

They finished first, third, and fourth at Region 4 and it looked like their fitness is still good enough to compete and we know what kind of competitors they are.

Speaking of competitors, while Elijah Bliss (Davenport) didn't run a sub 16-minute race last week, he did compete like a hard as nails runner. I won't count him out of any race any more.

The Region 2 champ Tyrus Cowan (Sunnyvale) is a major contender. He ran 15:57 to win and has been under 16-minutes just about all season long including a 15:26.

The Region 2 runner-up Isaiah Colorado (Van) went 15:59 and has run as fast at 15:22.

Tyler Hamblin (Marble Falls) is also enjoying an awesome season. He won Region 3 with a 15:33 run. Runner-up Victor Aviles (Burnet) looks to be getting back to form after going 15:41.

Another team with a dynamic duo is Salado. Coulson Boyd and Luke Anderson are heavy hitter and went 15:43 and 15:46 at Region 3.

Other Runners To Watch: Andres Rios (Huffman Hargrave), Isaias Zarate (Burnet), Daniel Martinez (Sanger), Sam Musgrave (Sanger), Antonio Arreola (San Elizario)

I think Lewter wins, but the La Feria boys will push him, so with the Salado boys. McFarlin is really good and I don't think we know just how good he is yet. Fernandez, Bliss, and Cowan will be front runners.

The 4A boys is as hard as 5A and 6A to make all-state.

Chances To Win Team Title

The Canyon have already won two state titles in a row and they look to be the Canyon program of old.

Unless things go awry, Canyon should be able to add third straight title. They're led by seniors Lewter and Fernandez, but have a strong support group. They've run sub 16-minute averages and sub 60-second gaps several times this year.

They went 16:00 with a 1:02 spread to win Region 1-4A. Their number three through seven runners ran with a 27-second gap.

Dumas was second at Region 1-4A with a 16:57 average with a 20-second spread and Big Springs was third with a 17:01 average and a 52-second gap.

Gainesville ran a 17:09 team average with a 33-second to win Region-2.

Salado ran 16:18 to win Region 3. They have the talent and runners to push for the podium for sure and possibly challenge Canyon. However, they'll surely have to get tighter.

La Feria has the power up front to challenge and podium. However, they'll have to tighten up as well to push for the team win.
